I think the question is how does the digital stream get into the Sonos, not out. In my case my Sonos has a standard cat5 ethernet wired connection to my gigabit backbone in my house. My NAS sits on the backbone a few hops (hubs/switches/routers) away. And of course the router puts us on the the internet through my cable provider. All standard, easy and cheap stuff. Apparently Sonos, or any other media player, isn't happy to use a wireless connection to retrieve the flac or alac files it does support.

It doesn't really matter whether the digital stream gets from point A to point B wired or wirelessly. You are just moving data. (I of course assume we all have relatively stable networks) In the end it is the DAC's and connections you use that are going to make the difference.

Jim, that should be the case that wired/wireless doesn't matter, but not in reality. Weak signals, many devices using it at the same time, limited buffers, etc., all cause wireless to be less reliable for a heavy stream. As technology improves this should get better, but then we'll only ask it to do more and more. Given the choice a wire should always be more reliable.
John

Agree with Jim. But FWIW, Sonos requires at least one of their boxes (ZP90 or bridge, others?) to be physically connected to a wired ethernet connection, and then it uses its own proprietary wifi network to stream wirelessly to other Sonos boxes not connected via wire.

There are no CD's or FLAC files that come anywhere close to taxing our networks. We could probably stream multiple channels and not have an issue. I guess if your kinds were watching HD movies while you were streaming it could cause an issue but not under normal circumstances. (I haven't had to worry about those issues thank goodness) Of course a wire would be more reliable but I am not running wires around my house for no reason. |
