I have very recently tried at home for 3 days a K5-xeMP. Altought I think it is a fine preamp it was not fully ticking all my list items in particular for PRAT and a kind of 'too polite' sound. I finally returned to my beloved Shindo preamp (despite not being a balanced design) and I indeed prefer it. However, I have auditioned (in shops and friend's system) several times the KX-R and I was always thrilled by this superb preamp. So, based on your experience, could you please let me know the biggest differences between the two AYRE pre's in your system ? Thanks much.

Has anyone compared the sound of a KX-R to an AX-5 as of yet?

I heard this thing a few years ago with a dCS stack and I think some very large Magnepans and it was profoundly good. An awe inspiring piece of gear. Better than the more expensive Boulder.
