Bart - Don't give up on your Halgorythme amps! I've never heard them but they are true works of art, an extension of the designer's heart. I've heard the Molas on several occasions and am not very impressed by them. Of course they do some things well as most good Class D designs do, but they just don't provide the same level of engagement as top shelf Class A or A/B solid state designs or tube amps like yours. That's my opinion anyway for what it's worth, but of course YMMV always applies in high end audio.

Bill, thank you for your feedback about Mola-Mola.
And don't you worry, I'm not letting my amps go that easily. Just like Jérôme's system has different amps to drive the same speakers, maybe somewhere in the future I'd like to have that choice also. We'll see.

I don't know if I could generate a list of 5 companies that I would definitively call top 5. I also only play in the shallow end of the big pool, so my exposure is to what I consider to be "affordable high performance" audio. I also have been a long time SET owner, so by their very nature those products are off the beaten path..
When I bought my current speakers I had to move away from SET, and found myself exploring more traditional amps. I had a very nice sounding Musical Fidelity NuVista M3 integrated here, and it was quite satisfying. On a lark I bought a H2O Auio 250 Signature, and it is an exceptional amplifier! It has the mids and spatial characteristic on par with better tube designs, it has a refined top end not typically heard in Class D amps, and has bass control and current capabilities equal to big SS amps. For its $3Kish price tag, I can't think of a better amp than this one, it is an all around performer. Cheers Mister Pig |

I have owned: Fisher integrated (1965)
Carver amp Hafler preamp (1983) Forte' amp used Counterpoint, then Adcom preamp(199?) Bryston amp and preamp (2010) Still using the Bryston 4BSST² amp, and BP-26 preamp, even though the speakers I bought it for (Magnepan 3.6) have been replaced with Magnepan 20.7s this Spring. I also use a Conrad Johnson, and a Audible Illusions, and a Audio Research preamps Plus a nice VAC which is currently not functioning, but I hope to get repaired. (I like preamps) For preamps my top five (i might want to own or buy, ONLY) would be: Pass Audio Research VAC Bryston Conrad Johnson MY top five amplifier companies I might want to buy one... would be: Pass Audio Research Carver Bryston I have no fifth amp I would want to buy that make, at this time. |
