Has anyone here compared the Oppo BDP-105 to the DMP? I have the PS Audio DSD and am considering replacing my BDP-105 with the DMP for the ability to play SACDs through the DSD. My BDP-105 is not in my main audio chain and has pretty much been used only for streaming Netflix and Pandora lately.

Unfortunately not the 105 but the BDP-95. Going to my (also PSA) DAC the Memory Player totally blew the Oppo out of the water, especially in terms of the warmth that it gives you compared to the 95's more sterile/colder presentation. YMMV.

PSAudio DSP/DMP combo playing SACDs via I2S is spectacular to my ear. Way beyond the sum of the parts.

Haven’t compared it to the Oppo, but I’m a big fan.

Can I ask, Weirdcuba, what HDMI cable you are using between them?

The 205 brings the game much closer to the Memory Transport/DS DAC combo and is easier to use overall. But as with most things in the hifi world, the law of diminishing returns applies. For my money, the DS Memory Transport/DAC combo is hard to beat. Especially when Ted keeps upping the ante with new firmware updates.

Bear in mind though with RedCloud on the big DS DAC, if you are running it as a DAC (ie full volume) you may notice some clicks/pops with DSD sources (including the Memory Transport). PS Audio is aware of the issue and I expect the new firmware will fix it - but for now, the workaround is to run the DAC at 80 instead of 100 volume. Primarily happens on DSD files that have been mastered to louder levels

doggiehowser,

What is "responsible" for such clicks/pops on the DS Senior (it might be that on my DSJ those are not as present or perhaps they are further between)? The dac's firmware -Redcloud-, or the Memory Player's?

There seems to be a significant upgrade coming up for the DMP that PS Audio's new lead programmer is finalising as we speak. It's suppose to take care of many bugs and minor issues the player was having, and the DMP users folk are all anxiously awaiting for it to be released!

Efete

The problem is on the DAC side not the transport.

It happens when I stream DSD from Roon to the DS DAC as well. I noticed it seems less apparent on the DSJ so maybe it is not an issue on the Jr.

I’m looking forward to a better UI on the Memory Transport - id really like to try it on some BR audio concert discs. If only there’s a way to choose the tracks manually instead of using a screen. Some of my BR concert discs are on 24/96 and would benefit from the DS DAC.

Thanks for the feedback. I really appreciate it.

I hear what you say about diminishing returns, too. Fortunately, Oppo has discontinued the UDP-205 so I can pretend that the DMP is the only viable option at this point aside from sticking with my BDP-105. I would be interested in doing a side-by-side comparison of the two.

I have no regrets with the DMP/DS DAC combination either. It really is phenomenal. Still using the cheap bundled HDMI cable. The alternative is too scary
