Good for you jumping into the vinyl deep end. I got into vinyl 3 yrs ago this month and I am so glad I did. I FINALLY puchased a RCM - VPI 16.5 - last month and I agree my old vinyl sounds better,and it allows me to stop worrying about the what my needle is encountering in those old grooves. Btw, you mentioned wanting to stay in the 1k range for your 1st cartridge. I suggest looking into a Clearaudio Maestro. I am amazed how good this MM can sound. I just purchased my 2nd one. Very well balanced cart. Not flashy, not dull - to my ears - right on the money!
