I really do love my MA PL500s. A recent change of music servers reminded me that we are listening to a system, not just speakers. In addition, it reminds how chameleon like the PL500s are...meaning the associated components have a huge impact on the sound.

Christian,
Just remember associated equipment and the room really impact the sound. Of course there are no absolutes in Audio and you may prefer something else.

I've transformed my system from somewhat bright and fatiguing to fairly rich sounding over the last few years and you're absolutely right.

I read about using Stillpoints ultra ss or ultra 5 with the PL 500 which should give considerable benefits soundwise. I had the demo pair on castors for obvious reasons.

Yes, there's a guy on another forum that swears by the Stillpoints Ultra 5 under the PL500s. I haven't tried them yet, so I don't know. I didn't have mine spiked for a long time and just decided to spike them a couple of weeks ago. Not a night and day difference, but I submit anyone would be able to hear the difference in my room. How much are the Ultra 5s ?

I just looked up the price for the Stillpoints Ultra 5. If I had the money to buy whatever I wanted to, I would by them. I don't, so I just can't justify spending that much money for them.

Yes, ultra 5 is expensive, but you can use also the ultra ss for around 1/3 of the price of the ultra 5.

Other strong points of the 500 are the easy positioning even in my smallish room, very good off-axis and low-level listening.

Instruments and vocals had their rock-solid place in the stage, which was just amazing.

The advantage of a speaker this big is the ease of revealing the music.
And they can play really loud without any artefacts.

As you said everything matters at this level, so finding the right components is key and half the fun.

Have to look next for a new digital front-end to match.

Best.

I just changed from a Bryston BDP2 to the Antipodes DS GT and I'm amazed at how the soundstage has changed. Now images appear in front of the speakers, which in turn creates a deeper soundstage.
I'm looking into changing from my Jeff Rowland Aeris DAC to the Chord Dave.
