They Shall Not Grow Old
Just saw it on blu ray....
...don’t want to give away any spoilers...but when the colour comes in...pffff...impressive...hit me like a suckerpunch. Raw, honest, immensely moving. A must see if you are interested in the people who fought in WW1. A deeply human story. Last edited by JemHadar; 12-30-2018 at 07:54 PM. |

For those of you who missed it the first time around in limited release it looks like it is back in wider distribution. I hope they show the 30 minute "How it was Made" at the end.

It's also available on Blu-ray from Amazon UK. No 3D, but still good.

I look forward to seeing it soon - I visited a number of the battlefields on my travels (Ypres, Somme, plus others in norther France, as well as Gallipoli). When I was in UK last, I was traveling around the midlands on Remembrance Day (as they call Armstice Day in the UK), and every small town was having a commemoration - the town I passed through at 11:00 that morning (the armstice went into effect 11/11/1918 at 11:00) and where I stopped to see the parade seemed to have the whole population in the area there. Very moving, and the younger generation in the UK is likely not to forget the tragedy and yet honor those who sacrificed.

We saw the movie today - amazing what they did with the footage.
Jackson made the right decision focusing on those along the front lines (infantry & artillery) in Flanders and Northern France. I suspect there is enough footage of other aspects and theaters of the war to put one or more commercially viable documentaries together with the quality of restoration Jackson did here. Here is hoping someone does. They had a 30-minute "how the film was made" addition at the screening, narrated by Peter Jackson that I had the impression was not perhaps on the Blu-Ray. While how they processed the film and colorized it are all fascinating and worth watching, some of the scenes of the film had their back stories fleshed out, and hearing that probably most of those shown in one scene just before they went "over the top" in all likelihood were dead 30 minutes after the film was shot (and seeing the fear on their faces) is something I will not forget.

The French government paid for my Great Grandmother to visit her husbands grave I think for quite a few years after the war. The C in C, general Haig, who endlessly sent them 'over the top' is deeply hated in common memory. It was only the blighty tank that broke the deadlock. Which hadn't been invented at the time of this film.

Some of them might have survived then.
