Also, which power cord is the most important? i.e. if you were going to buy one really expensive cord and be a little more modest on the other ones, where does the expensive cord go?

To your power conditioner. Thats the most important cable in your system!

Oh man -- opening a whole bunch of worms with that one -- will be interesting to see how the posts pan out when I wake in the morning.

I'm a believer in this path (and I HATE the 'all mightly' and all encompassing word "power conditioner")

Power distribution
Source -- Esoteric in your case (dCS Transport in mine)
Amps
Preamps

Best Sir,

Bob

Yep, not a fan of the term or "power conditioners", either. Power distributors work for me. The "conditioners/regenerators" and "surge suppressors" I have tried either made no difference at all or made the system sound worse. Not so my Triton distributor; which was like a major component upgrade.

Nah, you didn't. I think it was just a thing of "terminology" more than anything else.

What I've done in my bedroom audio system doesn't quite answer your question, since my decision involves an earlier and a later version of the same two-meter-long midrange-in-the-product-line power cord (though the earlier is "cheaper" by virtue of having been purchased used). And I'm only in the second day of listening following the arrival of the newer cord. So bear that caveat in mind.

I've run the earlier power cord from the wall outlet to the "power conditioner" --actually three duplex outlets and a filter network silicon-caulked to the inside of a six-inch-diameter PVC pipe. The newer cord runs from the "conditioner" to the system's digital-to-analog converter.

As noted, I'm very early in the audition cycle, but I'm gobsmacked by the results thus far. I expect to write up a review detailing specifics in the appropriate manufacturer's forum after I've had more time to listen (and have finished a current writing project that's now at 55,000 words and begging me desperately for a compelling denouement).

Nonetheless, at this point I'd offer the following rationale for my power-cord placement decision (and perhaps for what I'm hearing): Those who advance the theory that a component's power cord is not the last two (or whatever) meters of what's being fed by the power grid but rather the first two that the component "sees" may well be onto something. All I can say is that my DAC seems to get quite a charge out of it.

In the past I would have ranked the importance as:
1-Power
2-Speaker
3-Interconnects

After auditioning then purchasing my Opus speaker cable I would revise this in my case to:
1-Speaker
2-Power
3-Interconnects
