Occasionally they do fail and when they do it leaves little doubt about what happened. The most smoke I've ever seen come from an engine was on a Mack 350 diesel with a blown turbo. I've seen lumber yard fires with less smoke than that fiasco.

Ceramic has a very low coefficient of thermal expansion. Likely ceramic race & sleeve to match expansion rates. But, as with you, am far removed from such things these days.
