I wouldn't put too much stock into this article. It's been doing the rounds. It's a great example of shoddy journalism IMO. Hardly reliable.

If this was going to happen there would be a lot more coverage.

You may be right, but everytime i visit my local stores it seems there is one less rack with cd's available. I've noticed this trend and felt it was only a matter of time. My 18 & 20 year olds never bought cd's growing up, they download everything. I think this is the way of the last couple of generations.

I think this has more to do with the economy than CD's going bye-bye. Why have your money tied up in inventory that doesn't move? Unfortunately much of that dumped music is the kind we here would most likely buy. It's sad walking by the endless American Idol and Glee CD's to see that most of the obscure music that I look for has been wiped out.

I like having physical media - both for music and movies - so I don't like hearing this news at all. I do rip my CDs to the computer via EAC into FLAC format for convenience and non-critical day to day listening, but I like having my CDs around and I don't see that changing.

Long live CDs and LPs, and it sounds like this will be another reason I will be glad to have my Amazon Prime account!

My format of choice is vinyl. If I can't get the music I want I search it out in hi-resolution download if it is available. If I can't find it in hi-resolution download then I will purchase the SACD or CD as a last resort. I play the SACD or CD once then copy the disc to the server. Then I keep the SACD out and put the CD into storage in case I need it later or want to refer to the liner notes. I will listen to SACDs on the player, but rarely the CD.

For me I see a trend with most new music releases. If you watch late night tv the bands promote the album on vinyl now. Maybe the record labels are realizing that if the purchaser wants physical media they are choosing vinyl versus the CD. If they don't purchase the vinyl they download instead.

I'm not confident the labels will completely eliminate the CD anytime soon, and it will hang around longer than 2012, but I do see hi-resolution download as the direction it will go.

I say good riddance - it's been a long time coming, and the less clutter, the better.

I don't need to "feel" a CD - I need to "feel" the music.
