Depends on which group you ask. GA pilots universally sing the praises of Bose headsets because of their comfort and noise attenuation. High end audio groups have a very different reaction to Bose products as do Public Address sound engineers. The general public I feel have been allegedly conned via somewhat misleading marketing for expensively priced mediocre products.
That said I have employed Bose PA speakers in live band sound reinforcement, the midrange is quite good on speech and certain instruments like clarinets and alto saxes. For anything else an additional subwoofer is definitely required. On the negative side the driver cone surrounds rot with age and due to the number of drivers repair is not cheap.

"Exciting" is not the first thing to jump to my mind...

Radio delete in the 993.

The real soundtrack is in the rear with the Zuffenhausen ponies...

Default Bose

Harsh, but an interesting read. As Paul Klipsch once stated (not sure if he originated the phrase)….."No replacement for displacement." I believe it stated in Paul's book, he wasn't a fan of Mr. Bose as well.

I read once about how Amar cupped his hands at a CES and said, "Hello, Paul". Paul turned his back, put his hand in front of his mouth and said, "Hello, Amar".
Referring back to the mention of Consumer Reports, back in 1965 or 1966 they tested
phono cartridges and put a Decca cartridge on the same Garrard arm as the others and
proclaimed it the worst cartridge ever because its performance was not good...
If someone tells me that they own Bose I will not insult their purchase, but if someone asks me for advise I let them know they can do better, usually for less.

Having met Michael in person while he was in Poland (we went for a dinner where we had plenty of time to chat) I can only say that I got a very different impression of him than you do Julian.

Passionate, knowledgable and trying to keep away from the audio politics as much as he can.

Only heard the 901 once, many years ago. Wasn't impressed then.

Later GM began offering Bose system in Olds Toronado, Buick Riviera, Cadillac Eldorado & Seville as an extra cost option, beginning 1982 or 1983.

All sounded horrible, IMO.

Worse still, the Bose car systems exhibited problems long before their Delco counterparts. The problems were usually due to the crummy amplifiers built into each of the speakers - creating a nightmare back in the day. A nightmare that was exacerbated when some dope attempted a "repair" by replacing the head unit with another - not realizing the original dash unit was only a preamp - when the issue was due to defective speaker amps in the first place!

So that's another nail in the Bose coffin - as far as I'm concerned. (No pun intended)

As to Bose's reputation with the masses, the following quote comes to mind:

"If you repeat a lie often enough, people will believe it..."

Sounds Political, but we'll allow it.

OMG a company using marketing and saying there not in it for the money while they are in it for the money is unheard of !

Bose has been more successful that other at marketing for the masses and it has irritated other vendors because they have become the reference for 90% of the population. Anyone a little bit interested can see there are much better options available.
