Break in for REF 10 preamp?
What is the ARC recommended break-in? Still in the 600 hour range as with other ARC products? Any experiences with sound changes or improvements would be appreciated. I am hoping to take delivery of my REF 10 preamp in a week or two to replace my REF 5SE.

Hi, I have a REF10 with 60 hours, and sound a lot better than a REF5 (Non SE) that I had. I have not felt any downgrade of sound quality at this moment, just improvements. I am sure, you will be surprised with this upgrade. The label that was attached to the preamp, it recommends 600 hours of break-in.

600 hours is nonsense. That is what they claim but absurd. It sounds sweet immediately but expect most of your break in completed after 100 hours.

You can expect more than 600 hours for complete break-in, if it is similar to the REF40. A REF5 Se owner has reported me that only after 1000 hours his preamplifier became stable and good sounding.
I have found that at some point after 100 hours the sound quality of the REF40 and CD8 decreases and around 300 starts increasing again. All IMHO. |

Thanks to all for the replies! My REF5 SE is at 400 hours and sounds amazing - much better than my previous REF5 (which I traded in after about 800 hours). Sounded great after about 100 hours so I hope I can get the same from the REF 10.

I've heard the same from several owners - that around 100 hours the sound takes a turn for the worse until you reach around the 300 hour point, where it sweetens and expands very, very nicely.
My dealer has said you don't need to push the preamp to accomplish this; simply letting it run 24 x 7 for a few weeks with a tuner or other source playing when you're not actively playing a different source will accomplish this quite nicely. |

In my demos with Ref 10, when the unit was below 600-650 hours, it was relatively dull and tonal balance was not at its best. After 650+ hours, extra refinement came and it sounded as good as I have not heard from any preamp.

Thanks to all! Starting break in as of yesterday. This thing is amazing right out of the box! About 22 hours on the clock and sounding amazing.

I bought a ref5se and refph2se a few weeks back. I've only got about 150 hours on the pre and 100 on the phono. Been traveling a lot lately. In the beginning, bass was thin, but now it's finally starting to fill in. Many folks I've talked to have said the 100 & 300 hour mark is when the magic happens. I concur that a 100, I got a smoother blend across the range. It's not quit where I want it, but its improving every day. I was going to use a burn in disc, but decided I wanted to hear the transitions and enjoy the journey. Don't get me wrong, they have both sounded very very good, out of the box.
Enjoy the music and the journey! Scott
