Default Dvorak: String Quartets

This is a great disc. Listening again several times over.

Pavel Haas Quartet

These guys don't put a foot wrong and every release the put out is intense and excellent. This one was selected as Gramophone's Record of the Year for 2011. The recorded sound is good (but not as good as that of the more recent Janacek release).

The picture on the cover takes me back to Prague and walking across the Charles Bridge.

Default Schubert: Der Tod und das Mädchen

More chamber music...

Schubert: Der Tod und das Mädchen, D531 (Death and the Maiden)
Takacs Quartet

Fierce playing by the Takacs with a feeling of black despair that gives way to anger. (Did you know that these guys are based in Boulder, Colorado? Interesting.)

The recording is vivid and realistic.

Default Beethoven: Symphonies Nos. 4 & 5

Now this...

Beethoven:
Symphony No. 4 in B flat major, Op. 60
Symphony No. 5 in C minor, Op. 67
Minnesota Orchestra, Osmo Vänskä

Very nice playing from this American orchestra for these well-known pieces and nicely complemented by a clear and transparent BIS SACD recording. However, I long for an interpretation/recording that is more aggresive.
