Default Follow-up with initial impression

The Wire World Silver Starlight 7 USB A-B 3.0M arrived swiftly to my doorstep thanks to Ivan, the folks at WW, and speedy holiday shipping... which always slows down December 26th.

So, I signed up for Tidal today... if it lasts. Heck, at least it’s monthly.

Initially tried to play Tidal via USB to the Oppo Sonica. Well, I got side-tracked by the Oppo Sonica app the Oppo user manual told me to use. I could only find that on my iPad or iPhone. That was pretty easy to get working. It leads you through the steps. Boom. Before I knew it I was streaming wirelessly. Whoa! Not my intention, but OK. The wireless streaming was great quality. I had a few skips to start, but it seemed to catch up quickly, once I stopped fiddling around with different tracks and picked one to stick with.

I decided for comparison to stick with Pink Floyd, Division Bell, A Great Day for Freedom.

I was intent on listening via USB. I had an old Mediabridge USB printer cable connected from the iMac to the Oppo just as a tester for a start. It was easier to do from the front of my system. Once I decided to use my brain and play directly from Tidal to the Oppo USB input, and switch the sound output setting on the computer to the USB (it automatically recognized the Sonica both via USB and wirelessly) it switched on. There was an immediate noticeable drop off in SQ with the old printer cable, compared to wireless. Wow. I was concerned. Did I waste some cash on the WW USB Silver Starlight 7? Well, time to find out.

First of all, the WW USB is quality in hand. A sleek, sturdy yet supple cable, it inspired confidence. It came in the nice WW zipper case I’ve now gotten used to. I took out a shelf, did my balancing acts, and twisted and stretched my back, legs, arms and fingers into contortions to thread the WW USB into what I hope will be its resting place for some time. I did the necessary tests and plug-ins, and voila! Music!

Improved SQ was instantly noticeable, with improved definition across the spectrum, but especially in the mids and bass. My speakers are not very detailed in the highs, so that is harder to make a fair comment on. Impressive! I swear, the volume went up a smidge too. That should not be the case, but that is what I perceived. Fascinating and delightful! Not quite magic, but my system is not there yet. I likes!

On initial impression, I would rate SQ for the three options I have:
1) Wire World Silver Starlight 7 USB A-B 3.0M
2) wireless streaming
3) ... at a very distant third, the standard printer cable.

Sorry not to have other cables to compare, but I am more than pleased with the outcome. Thank y’all for your recommendations!

Best,
Shrinky

I'm confused why are you not just using the Sonica's built in streamer to use Tidal? No cable needed.

Good question, Jack. I prefer a hard connection if possible. I am a reluctant streamer to begin with, slow to convert. I still prefer physical media too, but decided to try this streaming thing slowly. I’ve always been a slow adopter, but I usually eventually get there. The built in streamer is more convenient, no doubt. However, I suspected the cable may sound better. To my ears it does so far.
Now, I can do both.
Best,
Shrinky

I am super excited about the Bryston BIT15! . The hardest part will be waiting until Christmas morning. After my hands are sore from taking dolls and toys out of their insane theft-proof packaging for a few hours, and the kids have settled down... then, hopefully, I’ll try it out.

But that is another story...

If that's the way you hear then that's the way to do it, I just like to keep computers out of the Audio chain if at all possible. I've had a Sonica since the first batch and it's streamer works extremely well. Good to have multiple choices.

Jack,

The Sonica streamer does work extremely well. I have been impressed so far. I got mine when it first came out too, though have used it mainly as a DAC between transport and integrated until now. This is my first foray into streaming, with or without it. I am pretty open to options for working with it, and really do appreciate the questions, opinions and discussion.

The jury is still out for my ears. These are just initial impressions. I will probably listen both ways more over time. I don’t tend to drive the same route between places every time, especially when I have multiple choices in routes. Further system upgrades will also likely be more revealing.

I fully agree there is a logic to keeping computers, or any extra link for that matter, out of the chain. There is also rationale for direct physical connections to reduce any losses or interference that may occur wirelessly. How good is the Apple Airport vs the iMac USB at sending a signal? Which is better? Try and find out. It is really cool that the Sonica has this versatility. We get to play with it to find out what each prefers. I also have a CD transport connected via coax to compare when I get a chance. I have not tried the optical input option, though.

I imagine there are a multitude of factors that can play into the difference in sound of wireless vs USB. For example, in the Sonica design, how is the signal processed differently from WiFi vs USB, once it initially enters the device? How is the clock managed differently? We could look at multiple minute variables. How many other factors affect these pathways...? I do not know the answers. These variables likely vary between components and systems as well. There is another thread currently asking a similar question... which could be expanded exponentially.

For now, they both sound great. The USB sounded a bit more more ”full” to me initially. But on a different day, with a different song... who knows. Wireless sounds excellent and is super convenient. The printer cable was scratchy and dead sounding, comparatively. The WW Silver Starlight 7 was definitely a great recommendation to start, and pairs beautifully with the Oppo Sonica.

Enjoy the music!

My best,
Shrinky
