Thanks LB! LOL about the user name, it really hasn't fit in awhile. I'm Alpinist over on Audio Shark and What's Best Forum, although everyone knows me as PlanarSpeakerFan over here.

Best,
Ken

Ken - you'll have to post a report about your MkIIs. You're a lucky man.

I'm a new member on the board. I've had Quatro Wood CTs since Oct, 2013. I love my speakers as they are accurate, dynamic, and sound great with all genres of music. Richard Vandersteen is very approachable and I appreciate his customer service and the approach he takes to speaker design.

So that's what you got, Ken? Nice! I've enjoyed watching your upgrade path.

Did you keep the soulution electronics to drive the Vandersteens?

Hi Carlos,

I hope all is well with you. I've had my Vandersteen 7 MkII for about a week now. They are breaking in nicely and thus far they are the epitome of ease, transparency and cohesiveness. They strip away layers of coloration, distortion and noise, and produce a purity of timbre that I didn’t think was possible. They are the most non-fatiguing speakers I've ever had the pleasure to listen to. Their musicality lends itself to total immersion. I've been staying up all hours in marathon listening sessions. I'm currently running them with the Esoteric K-01X, Soulution 520 preamp, 501 monoblocks and Kimber Select cabling.

Best,
Ken

Congratulations, Ken. It must sound amazing. I saw the review for your Vandersteen 7 MkII in Stereophile last month. Very nice.

I did notice that the sensitivity spec is 83.5 dB/W/m. Do these speakers need a lot of wattage to achieve satisfying SPLs?

Hi Carlos,

Not nearly as much as you would think. There is one high-pass filter per channel that goes between the preamp and amps, which reduces output by 6 dB below 200 Hz. This greatly reduces the load on the primary amps. Then the 400 watt monoblock in each speaker for the subwoofer raises the output back up 6 dB. My Soulution 501 mono amps (250 watts per channel into 4 ohms) barely break a sweat driving the Vandy 7 MkII.

Best,
Ken

I bought a lot of gear from Bruce in the 80's when I was in he Navy. Just great guys there. New to this board. Love my Treo's but they are on the market. I'm moving up to Quatros. That's the sweet spot in his line. I fell in love with his amps too. Those are just stunning. After spending time listening at Audio Connection two weeks ago to the mk2, Niigata 7000 and the ARC ref 6 with Vandy amps I was in shock. I've been fortunate to hear some great and very expensive systems but none were as good as what heard that Sat evening when everyone was gone. There were emotions and no words. Just stunning. There is a reason he wins best sound whenever he's showing.
