Like Orson, I will not sell the 4300 before it's time. That would be when I'm no longer among the living. It's just a lot in a small package.

Tom.......I agree. I could sell everything except the MAC4300V and a pair of speakers. I would still have a great sounding McIntosh system. I'll be keeping mine for the full journey. Someone else will eventually appreciate owning my 4300V but not while I'm still here.

So he will have to wait long long long years Dan ! That's all I wish you !

All this discussion about this receiver makes me almost regretting investing in the the MAC1500 !

Great story Dan! Every time I see a mint one of those later model receivers, I want one. I don't know where I'd use it but I just want one. They really do have so much in one box.
The 4300 looks to have real veneer side panels; is that correct? I have the impression the 4100 has vinyl clad.

Rest assured, I caught that back in '79!

MAC 1500 was Mc's first receiver, and the only one with tube amplifier section and a relatively rare model. It's altogether in a different category than the later models.

Yes, the MAC 4100 had a 3 piece particleboard cabinet but custom solid wood cabinets are available from Audio Classics.

MAC 4200, 4275, 4280 and 4300 were supplied with solid walnut side panels.

Not the "worst" receivers ever made but the 4275/4280 were definitely not the units of the MAC xx00 series and cannot drive 2 ohm, unlike their bigger brothers.
Thanks a lot for your input
I think it sounds really good, and it seems to have a good tuner section. So, why wouldn't an interconnect work, if that is the problem? I can't try it out now... she doesn't live with me.

Ron.......The McIntosh 4300V receiver's "Preamp Out" and "Power Amp In" RCA connectors are connected internally at the special RCA connectors of the "Power Amp In" jacks. There is an internal contact that remains closed when no male interconnect is inserted in the "Power Amp In" jack. This connection allows the preamplifier to feed the power amplifier section of the 4300V without external jumpers being required. Over time this internal contact point inside the "Power Amp In" female RCA connector can become corroded making the connection noisy or breaking the connection entirely. One of the ways to help clean this internal contact inside each of the "Power Amp In" RCA connectors is to insert a male RCA plug in and out of the female connector a few times. It helps to dab a small amount of DeOxit on the positive center probe of the RCA male connector to help remove oxidation and improve continuity at the internal contact point. An alternative to DeOxit would be to spray Contact Cleaner inside the connector then insert and remove the Male RCA plug several times, then spray again and repeat the male plug insertion and removal. I suggest you give this a try with the 4300V unplugged from the wall. Insert and remove the male RCA plug in and out of the "Power Amp In" RCA connectors several times. This should clear up any connection issue in the switch contact that exists inside the "Power Amp In" connector.

Let us know if this solves your problem.

Ron.......Were you able to try my suggestion on the "Power Amp In" jacks on your MAC4300V?

Sorry for taking so long, Dan. It's at my ex-wife's house (my daughter lives with her) and I should be able to do that tomorrow. Thanks a lot!
BTW, it is not a 4300V but a 4280. Looking at the back apron it appears to be the exact same deal, though.
I've never heard it fail, but my girl has described the sound to me and it occurs to me I also need to rule out the amp section too. I've had receivers that would fail in a way that sounds like what she's describing... it is always after she's been playing it for about an hour or more, and never when first powered on. This includes a fairly new Yamaha CR-620 back in the day, and the repairman wrote that there was a bad transistor in the pre-driver stage.
All this gives me an idea. There is another receiver in that house that rarely gets used so I can connect the speakers to that one and run a patch cord to it from the 4280's PRE OUT jacks. But first I'll try the cleaning that you described.

Ron.......I'm hoping this technique will solve the issue. I am curious to hear how it works out.
