There is, and always has been, major misunderstandings when it comes to "time coherence" and speakers.
First, there is the timing of the individual drivers with respect to the listening location. This is what Wilson focuses on. With ridiculous precision he makes it possible to position each driver within the speaker so that when the leading edge of any sound comes from them, they all arrive at the ear at precisely the same moment. Hence, his insistence that it's "all about time". However, this does NOT mean that the speakers are "Time Coherent". Things get complicated when crossovers are introduced, because all except ONE type of crossover introduce time delays of their own. And Dave Wilson has specifically insisted for years (and confirmed for the new WAMM) that he does not like using the ONLY type of crossover that eliminates timing delays. This is why, no matter which Wilson (including the WAMM) you ever subject to the gold standard of timing measurements, the Step Response, you will always see the sound from the tweeter arriving first, followed by each subsequently larger driver. Dave Wilson can wax philosophically till he's blue in the face about the timing of the twists in his wires, the timing of the amps being used, and the exact precision of the timing he has built into the cabinet adjustability, but Wilson speakers are not now and never have been time COHERENT. You must be very knowledgeable about speaker design to see just how cleverly he works his way around these truths. And, frankly, I have always been entertained by the ways he does this. But I've also been around long enough to know that the people spending $685,000 for his speakers don't give a rip about how he does things. Now, since I've seen some people get a little derisive when someone else brought up this subject, let me say this about MY experience with Wilson. I have been called upon by many many times to professionally set up Wilson speakers all over North America, from the biggest shows to the personal systems of some of the biggest names in music. I have had both Peter McGrath and David Wilson praise my ability to get every last ounce of performance out of Wilson speakers in multiple locations. So I know these speakers. Period. I don't personally prefer Wilson speakers, but I know them inside and out. And I respect the efforts that David puts into his design, even if I don't agree with all of this priorities. |
