Default Back to the Future

Wow, those MBL's look like something from another planet! They make Ohm F's look normal by comparison.

John, we love Ekornes chairs - we've got two more in our theater. They're the best seats in the house. Bill Legall has two pair of IRS set up in two different rooms in his house. He specializes in restoring the midrange and tweeter panels that degrade over time. He also has a pair of Ohm A's which are extremely rare. Fascinating guy and a true craftsman. For example, he had super light voice coils specially fabricated for the F's, with Kapton formers and high temperature adhesives.

Here's what they look like with the grills on:

That is a cool story Tom and a fabulous ending to boot. I had heard of these speakers in the day, but never saw a pair in person. It's great to have someone like Bill available who knows his business and one that provides the self confidence to you, the owner, the speakers are in the best of hands for the rebuild.

Congrats sir.

Best

Bob

Thanks Bob,
I'm not sure if these will replace the Sophia's, time will tell. I really restored them for our lake place, and they'll be awesome there.

Bill is quite a craftsman, and the go to guy for all things Ohm and Infinity. The F's were a radical design, and many have faulted Ohm for having a ground breaking design that they cut corners on rather than built them correctly. You now have a proper set of F's and you are to be commended for your commitment to bring them back to life in proper form!
Congrats, and thank you for sharing.
Regards,
Jim

Dave,
They are visually pretty cool looking, at least I think so! Kelly is getting used to them. They're about twice the overall cubic volume of the Sophia 2's.

Jim,
Nice to see you know of Bill. Ohm did a lot of things really well, but consistency in driver production and good material science were not among them. Bill made hundreds of small changes to improve the performance.

Back in the day, I had an SAE 2600 driving mine - I think it was 600 wpc into four ohms. So I frequently blew them up or shook them apart, pretty much in equal measure.

I've been routinely hitting 100 dB spl peaks with an MC 275V, so there has been a big efficiency improvement. Hopefully these will stay together.

Tom

Those Fs are some of the most beautiful speakers out there. The size of my apt and wallet would not allow them but 2s are not out of my reach.I have spoken to John on getting a pair that was traded in on.They make new ones and take trades for$ and make up the difference. He told me he puts them up for sale at different sites and does not sell out of the Bkly site.Ohm/Walsh or Vandersteen 2ce would be my go to speakers if they came up at a relatively discounted price.Right now I have DCM TimeFrame 350s and a gaggle of others.

alarmme - welcome to AA!

I owned the Walsh 4 for over 10 years, they are a very good loudspeaker. Like the F's, they need to be positioned away from room boundaries for the best performance. I'm sure the 2's would be a good choice if you can position them out into the room. I also like the Vanderteen 2CE - they come up for sale here in Minneapolis fairly frequently. Good hunting!

I remember Tech hifi. They had a room with sae amps and a pair of altec a-7s. that was a great system back in the day. Also heard my first pair of infinity monitor jr's with the soft dome mids and tweets. Still have them today with the original stands.

minne55,
Thanks for resurrecting this thread. I always liked going through the Tech HiFi books with all the systems and interesting pictures.

I still have the F's playing away at our lake home. Great speakers, and Bill's refurbishment is holding steady.

Tom
