Tom.......My first audio system of any caliber was purchased in 1968. The system consisted of Altec Voice Of The Theater speakers, a pair of McIntosh MC30 mono tube amps, Dynaco PAS3 preamp and FM-3 tuner, and a Dual 1019 turntable with a Shure V15 Type II moving magnet cartridge. From that year until now, that's 50 years mind you, I have bought and sold enough audio gear to fill a used equipment audio store if I had it all back. I don't even want to think of the money because it was never about that, but I still had to pay to bring home the gear and seldom profited when sold. It has been a fun and exciting journey through many companies' product portfolios. Naturally, through those years I developed a certain fondness for particular components. Often in hind sight they are imagined to be better than they actually were, but that doesn't end the nostalgic daydreaming about gear gone by. It's part of the fun of being an audio enthusiast, at least from my perspective.

I found and bought one of the last pairs of Dunlavy SC-V loudspeakers ever made. They retailed for over $17K but I got them for $6K because the business that bought John Dunlavy's company when he retired closed it about a year later.

They are over 6' tall and weigh 330 lbs each. Flat response to 20 Hz, used by many mastering studios.

Had to let them go because we moved to a small condo where they wouldn't fit and I couldn't play them anywhere near a volume level that allowed them to sound their best.

Rex.......You're right, the Dunlavy CS-V loudspeakers are not small condo speakers. Not only do they require a fair amount of real estate to perform their best, you would have to be the condo association president not to be evicted.

It's a shame they had to go. Beautiful speakers.

Great pic Dan! I sure do miss mine, especially now that we're back in a house with a nice living room where they would sound awesome.

They are so much bigger than SC-IV's. Massive behemoths!

If I win big at a casino here in Vegas, who knows what might happen.....

Tom
It almost sounds like Tom may be describing an old girlfriend. “It was a nice piece, but what I have now will run circles around it”.

I wouldn't say I necessarily regret it, but I gave away a Sony 5 disc changer years ago that I'd had since high school (20+ years when I gave it away). That sucker was bulletproof. Really quick to change discs, great to load up during parties and never had a single issue. I replaced it with a MVP871 where the transport crapped out in a matter of weeks, then moved to a MCD500 where after a few years the tray sometimes has issues ejecting. Sometimes the best gear is the gear that actually works.

I don't sell any gear. I just add it to the warehouse at work.

I do however regret letting a broken piece of audio gear go. I had a Kyocera R-851 that was my dad's when I was a kid. It blew and output transistor and was more than I could fix at the time. But, now I wish I had it because you can find all the parts on eBay.
