Default My Thorens TD125MkII has the dreaded hum

I have a beautiful restored Thorens TD125MkII long base built by Artisan Fidelity with an Ortofon RS309D arm and Ortofon SPU. In the last few months it has developed a hum. A low frequency hum only audible when playing a record at mid to loud volume. When you lift the arm the hum stops. I have swapped cartridges so not a cartridge issue. It is most definitely a TT issue as I have even taken the table over to my brothers house to try in his system and the hum is still there.
Any Thorens experts out there with some ideas?

How is this table grounded to your phono pre?

Ivan, It uses the standard phono cable ground wire to the Shindo ground lug.
The frustration is I have had this table for over 3 yrs and this hum has just developed in the last few months. I've tried a humbuster cheater plug, no help.

Have you contacted Artisan about the problem? I have never heard one of his tables but they sure are pretty. Hopefully you will get this sorted out soon.

Sounds to me like a cap is leaking; I wonder what electronics are inside the Thorens.

I have a call into him now, haven't heard back yet. It is a beautiful table. Being a woodworker by trade there are a few things I would do differently but it sounds fantastic, full, rich, solid sound.

Thanks Ivan, we can always count on you for knowledgable advice.
I just took the bottom cover off and I did notice that there is no ground wire connection to the IEC connector. I wish I knew more about this type of stuff.

The hum stopping when you lift the arm indicates that the arm is being grounded through your body. I suspect that the ground wire is broken within the arm. I suggest that you connect a piece of wire to the Shindo ground lug and touch the other end to any metallic point on the arm, ensuring that you do not touch the arm with your hand. If that stops the hum, it confirms my suspicion.

I agree with Bernard - possible broken ground in arm.

That will be very easy to try. Thank you for the suggestion Bernard.
