Default DIY Saturday, RCA Shorting plugs

Been curious about this for some time so today I’m doing a little DIY. Making some shorting plugs, one for digital output on the Luxman D-05 SACD and some for the unused inputs on the L590aii. I checked with Luxman and was given “ the go ahead”. The digital plug will use a 1/4 watt 75 Ohm resistor and the rest a 1/4 watt 470 Ohm resistor. I’ve also got some Telos Audio Design XLR (male and female), and RCA caps for the remaining plugs on the D-05 and L590aii. IMG_5374.jpgIMG_5371.jpgIMG_5372.jpgIMG_5373.jpg

I don’t have huge expectations and @ $2.50 her unit it’s no big loss. Given the low entrance fee I figured why not.

Some final details, closing up the ends of the RCA’s for a cleaner look. The orange is to identify the 75 Ohm plugs and the rest are all the same @ 470 Ohms. IMG_5396.jpgIMG_5397.jpgIMG_5398.jpg

Nice work! Thanks for the Audiogon link as well. I agree, in a well made system these should not make a difference (i.e. relay switched inputs, etc.), but when properly made they cannot hurt and could (at least) provide some protection against ESD (static) and of course dust/contaminants.

Question: is there a reason for the 470 ohm resistor value?

My reading on the subject suggested that 470 Ohms was best for phono inputs but could also be a default for any other input on which 100 Ohms would have been sufficient. The digital works best with 75 Ohms. I may make some 100 Ohm units as I have some left over RCA's from the pack of 12 I purchased. For now I'll start here.

So after some listening sessions using tracks and or LP’s I’m very familiar with I’d say I have a small improvement. I’m hearing just a little more detail or perhaps the details that were there are just a bit sharper. Given the price of admission I’m happy. I also realize that at this point anything I do will hopefully just refine what I have. In a few weeks I’ll have some Telos Audio Design RCA and XLR Caps to add.
