He's borrowed my modded 95 and loves it with the Sophia tubes, etc. I was going to get the 105 and have Dan mod it but I think I'll just keep my 95 and my Berkeley Dac 2 and Alpha USB and use that for my computer. I also run digital out straight from the Oppo to my Dac and the sound is terrific - more resolved than the tube output stage, which is great for certain material.
I wonder if the digital inputs could be later updated to 192/24 with a
firmware update if the USB digital input already supports it. That would be
a good thing to know.

I guess someone has to make a living.
Actually there are quite a few of us who think it is a bargain. There is a LOT that goes into Dan's work including a tremendous amount of R&D. I fail to understand some of the comments that are made sometimes...

Hi Sal - I'm pretty sure it is a limitation in implementation of the hardware/decoder if I have read and understood correctly, so I do not believe this will be fixed via a firmware update, unfortunately.

The good news is that the USB does support 192/24, and you can also download those level of high resolution files onto a portable USB hard drive and play them back (via the Oppo interface on your video display). I only have a few of those and that is what I intend to do - you can already do that with the 95 as well.

eugenius.......I'm not sure you have discovered the correct audio forum, but you may want to think before you post here again. Snipping, rude comments, and uninformed innuendo may be normal behaviour on forums you regularly visit, but this is not how we communicate at Audio Aficionado. Rude and inappropriate posts are a sure way to shorten your welcome. Please be advised that no one controls your attitude except you, but there certainly are controls in place here to ensure Audio Aficionado remains "The Friendly Forum for High-End Audio. It is up to you how this will turn out.

I've had a Modwright/Music Hall CD25 that Dan worked on probably close to 10 years ago. While it may no longer be state of the art, actually probably never was, it still sounds darn good and in some ways I prefer it to my unmodified Oppo 95. And that's pretty high praise IMHO.

Some of Dan's work may not be inexpensive, but I've found it to be worth the cost.

Just my 2˘ naturally.

Well I can use the USB input, but my computer is 25ft from where I'd have
the Oppo. It'd have to be a very good cable to compensate for the distance.
On the other hand the portable USB drives may be the option; it's just a
hassle to have multiple copies. That will the problem to solve once it's here.

Sal,

If you have a wireless connection from your computer to your router then you might be able to access the files from the 105 that way. If they're 192/24 high resolution files, then you'd be getting the full benefit of the 105 without having to run a cable.

Just a thought.

Hi Joe,

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll definately look into this; to be honest, I was
not aware of this option, so it opens up many possibilities. I think I have
to get the manual now and start looking at this in more detail.

Sal - Joe is correct that this is absolutely another option aside from using a portable USB drive for 192/24 files. DLNA streaming from a computer via ethernet or wireless does indeed work. You need a program installed on your computer like JRiver or Asset UPNP to enable this to function. I've used it many times successfully, however I found that my preference is to use the portable hard drive. I don't have that many 192/24 files - I have a lot more 96/24, and the vast majority of my collection is ripped from CD. I would rather not have to find a work around like you mention, but it is minor given all of the functionality that the Oppo players provide. Feel free to PM me if you need any assistance with setting up the DLNA streaming.
