I have a 'home built' version of a speed controller. I am pretty impressed with the improvement it makes.

I would be interested to hear about a new SDS.

While not home built I suggest you read this thread Digital Turntable Tachometer and DDS based PSU - diyAudio over at DIY Audio which discusses the Falcon PSU and Roadrunner tachometer by Phoenix Engineering. These are two commercial products that I purchased a few weeks ago. I am extremely happy with both of them. They keep my Scoutmaster 2 running at the correct speed within +/- .005 RPM. I have verified the stability using a test LP and the PlatterSpeed App for my iPhone and it is dead-on. There is also the added benefit of changing speeds at the push of a button instead of moving the belt. If you are looking for an alternative to the SDS (which I haven't tried) I highly recommend the Falcon/Roadrunner combo.
