Based on my experience with both Magnepans and Martin Logans, the amount of trade-off can be positively managed by strategic use of room treatment, particularly in room corners behind the speakers on the front walls. I've heard 1.7s in an equilateral triangle listening/seating arrangement placed 10' apart and 3.5' from a treated front wall - GIK diffuser panels behind the speakers, and they sounded incredible with deep tight bass and unbelievably wide and deep soundstage. I'm guessing being fed by a pair of McIntosh MC601 monoblocks had something to do with the sound quality, awesome even at very low listening levels.
I've had my eye on those for a while.

To my experience, I will suggest place the spkrs 1/3 into the room first and hear. That's what I am doing mine 6' from the wall into the room (19' deep)

This is exactly what I am doing. 10' off front wall in a 30' room. Seated position at about the 20' mark in the room with 10' behind the seated position.

5 ft.

Studies suggest anything @ 5 1/2 ft. or more makes it easy for our brain to distinguish between direct and the reflected sound from the wall behind the speakers.

I prefer dipoles out from the wall with no treatment for a livelier sound.

Speakers to wall and back to speakers.
5 ft + 5 ft = 10 ft
