I also like to go to this kind of obscure little bands, in search of new music...

Speaking of obscure little bands, we saw the Steve Miller Band at the Chateau Ste Michelle Winery, in a shared billing with Marty Stuart and The Fabulous Superlatives. The show was billed as “classic country meets classic rock,” and it was pretty darn good - excellent sound, a great view of the stage and a huge screen behind the stage showing closeups of the musicians. Marty Stuart wasn’t entirely my cup of tea, but he put on a good show, and Steve Miller is still in great form.

Friday evening we saw Los Lobos. A year ago we saw them at a big outdoor venue (Chateau Ste Michelle Winery) in a double billing with the Mavericks. This time it was at the 500 seat Lincoln Theatre in Mt Vernon, Washington. It’s a great little theatre, built in the 1920s as a movie and vaudeville theatre, with one of only 98 Wurlitzer theatre organs still in their original installation. The show was sold out and the band was awesome. I think Los Lobos is better in this sort of venue: they get energy from the audience and they clearly enjoy themselves, especially when a quarter of the audience is trying to jam their way down to the front to dance. We had great seats and the sound was very good. These guys are of course getting old, mostly in their 60s, but they still play well and with tons of energy. David Hidalgo looked like he was ready to have a stroke any minute, but his playing was awesome.

I saw them in a similar venue about two years ago. I stood in line for autographs and it was great - really appreciated them doing that. They were showing some mileage though - lots of nights on the road takes its toll.

Default What Live Music Are You Listening To Tonight

Just saw Alison Krauss this evening at the Johnny Mercer Theater in Savannah.

She was joined by long time friends including a couple of original Union Station members.

It was simply fantastic. The band was great and she is an ‘Angel Flying Close To The Ground’.

I can’t wait until she comes back next year.

Awesome. I saw her a couple of years ago and she was wonderful, I’d love to see her again.
