Mounting large LED TV to plywood
I have a nice dilemma. We are moving this coming summer into a brand new home. It will have a dedicated A/V room that is 21' x 16', with double doors on one short wall and a window on the opposite short wall. I asked the builder if the window could be eliminated from the plan, but according to code, it needs to be there.
I am looking at a 75" Samsung LED TV and mounting it to the wall, but the window will be in the way. I'm trying to figure out how to solve this. Considering covering the window with 3/4" plywood attached to the surrounding studs. I would then attach the TV wall mount (non-articulating) to the plywood (likely using bolts with large washers). My worry is will this be strong enough? I would really rather avoid the TV falling to the floor. Thoughts or suggestions?

There shouldn't be any failure of the plywood itself but you will need to mount the plywood to the wall and the TV to the plywood using appropriate fixtures that won't pull out over time.

You should paint the inside of the window with black paint. I might look grapy on the inside, which will be covered with plywood. On the out side it will look like the best window tinting ever. P.S. You only need the widow for secondary egress for code in sleeping room

Why does the window need to be there according to code? Is it in the basement? Maybe it is considered necessary for emergency egress. Before i renovated my media room I had a 58" plasma in front of the window. What I did was build an H-shaped wood ladder type stand that I fastened the mount to.
It was attached to the back of the equipment cabinet and braced to the centre mullion on the window. I'll see if I can find some pics. 3/4 plywood is more than strong enough as long as you have it attached to the wall studs. Extra strength can be had by thru-bolting the mount to the ply rather than using wood screws or lags. |

Fast forward to today. Inspired by your post, I emailed the builder directly this morning. Long story short, as the room will not have a closet, it does not need the window. Problem solved!!! Moral of the story...never trust a sales rep. Go straight to the source.
