At What Frequency?

At what frequency... do you cross over your sub(s) in your main listening area?

I learned quite a bit from Bill's visit this week. Prior to him coming I had my pair of F113's set at 80hz and liked it.

After he set up my Strad's properly I am getting much more solid Bass from them down to 35hz, which is exactly where I now have my F113's set.

As Bill described, they should slide in right below your mains.

Where is your crossover set?

Same here. I have had my subs set at 80Hz, but since I just traded in my Magnepan 3.6s for the Mac XR200s, I probably need to reset them since the XR200s go down to 20Hz. Any suggestions?

My crossover is set at 80hz, but it might be worth an experiment to try it lower.

My F-112 crosses over at 65hz with my fairly well set-up Guarneri Mementos.

I wonder if Bill would consider making recommendations for appropriate starting, or ball-park, settings with various Sonus Faber speakers.

Obviously my Mementos don't go nearly as low as Ivan's Strads and I'd like to have an informed and educated suggestion about where to start.

I think that at 65hz, the system sounds fairly good, but I may be way off. . . .

I don't think you're way off Julian...

Remember that how you dial in the sub is dependent on what it is doing. Two channel extension is different than LFE, and combination is different than both.

Ivan's subs are coming in under the Strads nicely though I suspect that ultimately he will set them slightly differently left and right rather than as Master/Slave.

In a high quality 2 channel system, never set the sub above 40hz. The temptation is always to over-do it (cutoff and volume). You want to feel low bass, but not hear it. A seemless steup never draws attention to any freq. band.

Most subs are not fast and tight enough to intrude into the mid-bass region and will muddy-up the sound. The JL Subs come closest, to performing well in the mid-bass.

It has always been my contention that 80Hz was too high as a sub x/o. Generally the bass and mid frequencies on a quality full-range speaker are more musical than a sub. Too high a setting of a sub will result in less quality mid-upper bass and mid frequencies. (Who is Bill? - nothing new here)
