Too me High End Audio means Audio with such a quality, that you can FORGET your troubles, your pains, your problems, your duties and so on, while you listen to a recording, and take time finally for YOURSELF !
High End Audio gives you the illusion you're in the center of the Universe, at least YOUR Universe. As simple as that ! An other definition already stated : High End means McIntosh to me ! But of course, if you can get all that with a simple and cheap Nad system, and a tiny pair of bookshelf speakers, then you're in high end too !

It may not be a bad idea for 2 "Best" threads-one for electronics, and one for speakers, since there are so many choices. Pete

With todays view on music reproduction and playback systems, anything better than an iPod might be hi-end. I believe Jim, in a previous thread, mentioned how much more competition there is for today's discretionary spending as compared to say the early 70’s and prior. I bring this up because I think it’s a contributor to the demise of hi-end audio retail outlets. Without them, most people are relegated to the big box stores for any kind of taste of standalone audio systems. It is hard to develop a passion for something that cannot be seen or heard. What we would define as hi-end and what the general populace would define a hi-end is probably miles apart.
