Nixie tube clock
We love gadgets. One cool gadget that I've had my eyes on for a good while is a Nixie Tube Clock. A bit over a week ago, my clock arrived. There are many types and styles available.
My choice has a very finely crafted mahogany base, with six type IN-8 tubes. This particular clock is made to order, and ships from Ukraine. I started the order process months ago; first waiting for it to be crafted, and then the transit from Ukraine, which was pretty slow. But it was worth the time and trouble, for she's a beauty. Here is a look right after unboxing: Here she is in her new setting; in the master bedroom, next to the bed and not far from my bedroom 5.1 theater setup. The blue backlights can be turned on or off, and the brightness can be adjusted, as can the brightness of the digits themselves. There are a variety of modes and settings. The amber "eye" in the wood base is inspired by the "eye" of the HAL 9000 computer in the movie 2001: A space Odyssey. It's a nice touch in what is known as a "steampunk" design. I really like this cool clock a lot!

Pete,
Very cool. I love nixie clocks. I built three of them several years back and all three are still going strong. Mike |

Very cool. The elegance of mahogany and steampunk style metal bits and trim pieces go very well together.

Hi Pete,
I also designed and built a nixie clock many years ago as part of my electronics training. It was an interesting project. Rather than using an oven stabilised Xtal (costwise) I just sourced the 50Hz mains frequency squared as a clock and used 74 series ic's and some nixie drivers. Fun working out 12/24 hour logic & mins secs. It worked well but went absolutely crazy during lightening storms Cheers, Allan |

I’ve always wanted one of these since I saw one in the TV show “Travelers”. Cool stuff!

Reminds me of my old H. H. Scott 4311 tuner with Nixies - a very cool tuner to have in the '70s. I think mine is still up in the attic!
