Just finished the original trilogy of Mistborn and have just started The Alloy of Law.

The first three were as good as everyone who recommended them to me claimed, especially the first one. If you’re thinking about reading them, do it!

Currently reading this comprehensive study of not only the strategy and operational planning, execution, and tactics employed in this generations-significant conflict but also the political objectives and maneuvering that led to it and the differences in the opponents' military culture and structure that all but dictated the outcome.

Walter Bourneman's "War of 1812". Talk about inept. That was the U.S., mostly (a few naval engagements aside). We were fortunate the Brits had better things to do.

"Doctors in Blue" by GW Adams. History of physicians in the Union Army, of which my g-g-grandfather was one. Many did not survive. Here is a bit of his war history:
http://elginareacivilwarsoldiers.blo...errifield.html
What was most surprising to me is how many battles, both minor & major, he survived. Talk about lucky. Some very bloody affairs. He was taken prisoner at Shiloh, but exchanged within a short time. As he did not muster out until Sept '65, this listing is not quite all he went thru as he mustered out at Camp Irwin, TX (Victoria) and had to get there from GA. A substantial trip in 1865.
My uncle was a forward aide station doctor (in front of the MASH units) in Korea. He lived in a cave thru the winter of 50-51. Said frostbite was the biggest enemy that winter.
Must run in the family.

Very interesting! Amazing that he survived all that. We have family history with WWII. Makes reading the various books quite personal.

Indeed it does. Along with my g-g-grandfather in the Civil War, was his grandson (my grandfather) as an ambulance driver in France & Belgium in WWI, father (Europe) & father-in-law (Pacific) in WWII, uncle in Korea and I in VN. Thankfully, no others since then. Always some interesting, family-relevant history to follow on same.

At this point I'm only about a tenth of the way into this 948-page monster found at a used bookstore, but as political history--it spans the period 1871-1940--it's at least every bit as compelling a read as the same author's The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich.

The British Are Coming by Rick Atkinson. First of three books about the American Revolution. The author uses a lot of stats about munitions and materiel used (and lost due to the vagaries of weather, the Atlantic crossing, rats, etc.) that is staggering at times. The level of detail in what will be a 3-volume work allows for a real sense of what the troops experienced and how the war could easily have been lost if not for a combination of fortitude and fortune.
