QX7 sit under spikes. They are two piece held together with a rubber grommet. Maybe not good for thick carpet. I do have commercial carpet tile with rubber base on wooden floor under mine. Is good. Last edited by MyPal; 05-15-2013 at 07:38 AM. |

Toga, you need to get the dealer back out to your house and have him help you position your speakers. The spikes are IMO irrevelant at this stage. 90% (at least) of the bass (especially the impact/quantity) will be evident with the casters on the speaker. If the casters had that much effect they would be useless. No, this is a speaker placement issue and you need some help. It's doubtful with all due respect to the website that it will come from here. It looks like you have the gear to drive these speakers. In general when positioning speakers maximize bass and bass impact first, then go with soundstage, imaging, and smoothness to the upper midrange and treble. It looks like you have a big room. Truthfully, I'd begin in the corners with the speaker's tweeters angled towards the listening position with my dealer present and ready to move them as needed to bring up the bass. Again, the lack of woofer movement is very positive not negative providing the hookup is correct and you are using an adequate amp. With the amp it's not the quality of the bass at this point that you are interested in. It's the quantity and impact. The fine tuning comes later. Be sure to have everything prepared (adequate amp/cable/etc) so that when your dealer arrives you can maximize his help. I don't believe room measurements with test equipment will be of much help either. Your ears and common sense and your dealer are what you need. I believe you are going to really like these speakers once you get everything ironed out. Last edited by Charles; 05-15-2013 at 10:28 AM. |

Toga, congratulations !! It's the best speaker i have heard .

The placement is the most important at this moment. The other things like feets, jumpers etc will do the final 5-10% imho. Like you mentioned, it's hard to do it alone. I would ask my dealer. The Q7's didn't impress me with the bassquantity.... BUT with the Bassquality, best ever heard. The mids and highs are also much better than all other Q's, like you said Toga. Enjoy them |

Ok for now, I will be calm about bass issue, until I get new meatier jumpers which will drive mid bass driver too.
They do have bass, but tonal shifted upward, that mean when I crank up, mid and high become up too and Up more than bass , I know new jumper will tame mid/high down and bring tonal balance back to neutrality Up to now I really enjoy new found transparency and 3D sound field and also PA-like output. This 3D sound field is much better than what I get from Q3. Music is like it come from anywhere not just from between speakers. That why I mentioned earlier that they make me think of MBL 101E. which I used to hear and like. Voices is so crystalline and clear, but this is also Nordost character. Now they are 10-11 feet apart tweeter to tweeter I sit 12' from ear to tweeter. Side wall is 12' away Rear wall is 6.5' from back of speakers. I cannot put them in corner, room is very wide. And closer to rear wall will make bass respond very uneven, I measured it. The faher away from rear wall bass respond At listening seat is smoother. Toga |

Toga, you sound like a wonderful guy. It's amazing how a website like this can bring folks together. 6.5 feet from the rear of the speaker means probably 10' from the front of the speaker. I always measure from the front of the speaker, not the rear in regards to the rear wall. With acoustic suspension the sound wave is launched from the front of the box. The Q7 is immensely deep. If the Q7 were much taller and hence much less deep the woofers wouldn't care, but if you were using the rear of the speaker as your reference the woofers would be much closer to the rear wall. When positiong speakers the front of the speaker ought to be the reference, even for ported speakers, much less acoustic suspension. I truly believe that you will be much happier if you at least try to start with the speaker much much closer to the rear wall and with your dealer present gradually move the speaker out into the room while both listening and measuring until you achieve the desired bass response from the standpoint of bass impact and quantity. Absolutely get the back of the speaker (cables, jumpers, etc) exactly as you want it but I hate to see you miss your best sound. You could listen to your new speakers for years and never know what you are missing because these speakers sound so good, period.
Again, I wish you all the best and I will be following you closely. ps. I fantasize about having a Q7. I would place them in the corners of my A-Frame rec room, rear as close to the corners as possible with tweeters pointed at the outside ears and sit about 15 feet away from the fronts. I think my room would be a perfect match for the Q7. I would probably never move them, just tweak the toe in for upper midrange lower treble integration/smoothness. If I didn't obtain quite the imaging/soundstage I wanted I figure I'd have up to 2-3 feet to play with coming out into the room from the corners without sacrificing bass. Thanks a lot Charles,
By the way I do use front baffle as reference point, but I just let you know distance measured from the back of it. When I had Salon2 I do measured bass respond in detailed. Start from speakers just a foot from wall then move forward 10 cm. each time until I feel the speakers were too close to my face. From graph, the closer to rear wall the higher the peak and lower the null. Pulling speakers forward into the room did not change the room respond graph,, but peak and null became less severe, that s why I keep front baffle of any speakers as far from rear wall as I feel comfortable. With Q3 front baffle at exact distance, no bass issue at all, also with Salon2, Sophia3, Definitive BP2000, all made good bass at this same position. But of course I will try many positions with Q7 as they are quite different from those speakers. Q7 have been playing non stop for 30 hours by now. They sound so smooth and three dimensional, I wonder how they will sound like at 1000 hours. I know if I want woofers to be much more controlled, Accuphase PS1220 power supply can help too, but this will be the Option later. Bed time for me, but time for burn-in tone for Q7. Toga - why didn't ypou ask for the single wire option ?
When I visited Magico factory 2 weeks ago, I have spoken with Alon Wolf and remembering your post where you mentioned the need for jumpers, I have specificly asked him about the single wire option - he basicly told me that it is available at no extra cost, no problem. |
