Maybe a dangerous thought to post, but out of curiosity I wonder what those who dislike Christmas music think about the holiday itself, if there's a connection there (no need to post, though, as I'm not necessarily asking and lest the thread go too far off topic). I like most Christmas music, but find personally that the melodies of traditional music are more energizing and inspiring than much of the other music of the season. Most contemporary music leaves me blank.

There's a CD I came across a couple of years back called "A Currier and Ives Christmas" that I find enjoyable, especially the track "Gesu Bambino." The CD is a mix of religious and secular songs, all instrumentals. And I've been known to play a little Christmas music when it's not Christmas, too.

Prepress,
I guess this is directed at me. Well, I do like Christmas because it seems to
make others happy. I have put Christmas lights up and down so many times that I must admit I'm tired of doing that, but after this post I'm on my way outside to put up some more lights, as that will make my family happy. I really don't get a happy feeling when my wife asks me to switch off my Music and put on some Christmas music, but I do it.
So, when I read this back to myself it looks as if I don't love Christmas, but I try not be negative and be a downer on everyone else.
For me, I'd rather everyone be nice to everyone else 24/7. But that's not gonna happen.
Merry Christmas!

Mike

No, not at your post specifically, as there was another post I saw earlier in the thread stating a dislike for Christmas music. And I'm not curious enough to push the question or engage in a debate on the idea, but was curious enough to voice (write) the thought.

Some Christmas music is annoying to me when I hear it coming from stores and radio even before Halloween (I did!) because it points to a commercial interest, not the goodwill you mention which comes out of the woodwork for a few weeks and vanishes rather than permeate the whole year. The cliché about the true meaning of Christmas being lost in all the craziness is true. The right music, in the proper context, helps me get back to that and keep perspective. I first became suspicious of some false "Christmas culture" when I got a present labeled "to Charles from Santa" in my mother's handwriting.

Even folks that don't like Christmas music will like Loreena McKennitt's Mid Winter Night's Dream

This is one of the best Loreena albums I've heard, sung in her inimitable style, with her usual instrumentation, and very good Christmas music too.

I am listening to this disc as I type this and I really like it.

Indeed a very enjoyable album, jprice. I'm listening right now to "A Winter Garden", a mini-album from Loreena McKennitt. It contains only five songs, all present on "A Midwinter Night's Dream".

Merry Christmas !
