Hmmm...looking at the site, I find the whole concept pretty overwhelming. Too many choices and I don't know how to judge them in any practical terms.

I think I may just let the stock tubes break in, and buy one spare 6D8J and 12AX7 from Musical Surroundings.

Dean, Jim McShane is someone I, along with ALOT of others trust when it comes to tubes, he's domiciled in Chgo. Google him, you won't be disapointed.....

smart move, FWIW, when it comes to 12AX7's I like RCA 'black plates' along with some sweet NOS RadioTechniques.

But how do they change the sound. If anything I just want something to smooth out the top end a little. Maybe that will come with break-in.

by all means, never start rolling tubes untill the unit is 'run-in', for you'll have no known benchmark from which to judge.

If after you've put some hours on and you feel the upper freq still need some taming I suspect the '58 NOS Radiotechniques (if you can find them) would help in that area. FWIW, I should try the pair that I have and see, but I have no sense of the high end sizzle you speak of running my stock tubes. Since the only thing we share in common is the Fosgate there are way too many other variables in our respective analog chains.

Kevin Deal from Upscale Audio also has a lot of experience with tubes.

Parts Connexion has a 20% off tube sale till the end of this month.

Dave, do those tubes take long to break in?

I have made no changes. I'm waiting on an order of spare tubes from Musical Surroundings. It is quieter than when I started out, but still a bit more hiss than I like. Maybe that's just the deal with tube phonostages. When I get the spare tubes, I'll see if any of them are quieter.

Otherwise it sounds fantastic and has very good synergy with my Naim SS equipment.

I'm very happy with my Naim pre/pwr. I have no desire to change anything about it. Actually, there is nothing I would change with any of my gear. It's all right where I want it to be. In a year or two I will be looking at a new phono cartridge, and maybe a better equipment stand at some point. But's that's it.
