Default Mc2301 vs Mc601

Hello everybody!

I'm new 2 AA & I'd like 2 have ur opinions on this: I own a couple of Mc2301s, which drive my Dynaudio Sapphire speakers.
As pre I currently have a C500C/T, which I will probably replace with a C2300 (but that's another story)...
I love my Mc2301s, but I've been struck by so many enthusiastical reviews of the Mc601 in this forum (even by heavyweights like Jdandy), so I'd like 2 hear ur impressions (& a comparison, if someone has been so lucky 2 listen 2 both these 2 gorgeous amps)...
Thx everybody!

Fabrizio

Fabrizio.......I have had the pleasure of auditioning the MC2301 power amps in Masterlu's sound system in his Cape Cod home. The sound of the MC2301 power amplifiers is fabulous in every respect. I am also the owner of four MC601 power amplifiers, two each in two separate systems. The MC601's sound is almost a carbon copy of the MC2301's sound, although I believe the solid state amplifiers grab control of the woofers with a slightly firmer grip, making the lowest frequencies sound quicker with leading edge transients. Of course we are comparing a 600 watt amplifier to a 300 watt amplifier, and most of us agree that more power is always a good thing, especially for dynamics. Since I have not heard the MC2301's and the MC601's in a direct A/B comparison it is difficult to pin down and describe any minor differences in their performance. Personally, I prefer solid state power amplifiers for their ease of use in the long term. I have no power tubes to fret over and worry about degrading or failing. I don't have the added expense of periodically replacing 16 KT88 tubes, and I don't have the temperature rise problem often associated with operating a pair of MC2301 in a room.

For me, the MC601's are perfect amplifiers. They make beautiful music effortlessly, offer an amazing value when comparing their cost to many other high-end manufacturers, and made it a simple choice to embrace the MC601's in both of my sound systems.

I guess I may qualify as the resident expert here. I had one of the first pairs of 601's off the line.. I LOVED them. Especially after they "burned in". They had a meter light defect and Mac took them back. I figured I'd take the opportunity to "upgrade" to MC2301's. Needless to say, I found it to be a very expensive mistake. The 2301's lack the punch and quickness of the 601's. A friend of mine came over for a listen and he confirmed my suspicion with one word. MUDDY. I also have a C500C/T. I replaced the stock tubes with Gold Lion reissues. It made an amazing difference. Quite possibly dollar for dollar the best money I've ever spent. I am now enjoying my second set of 601's and quite possibly, the best sound yet. Before you trade out your 500, change the tubes. Best of luck!
