I have a Bryston BDP-3 that I installed a 4 TB SSD in a couple of years ago and copied everything in my NAS into it. I got a similar result. If listening from the NAS or even streaming Qobuz, directly or with Roon, it sounds really good. However, if I match up song for song with the internal SSD it is unquestionably better from the SSD. Not enough to turn me off from streaming Qobuz which is still very good (and is an almost infinite source of music), but the SSD does sound better. This makes sense for both the Aurender and the Bryston- a very short, direct connection to a high quality burned file eliminates a lot of opportunity for noise to creep in that comes with streaming or even the networked NAS library. I am about to add fiber into the mix and see how much closer to the SSD I get with streaming.

Jim, you're the only other friend I know of that that knows of the ballet, La fille mal gardée.

It was made famous in the 20th Century by Frederick Ashton's choreography for it for London's Royal Ballet.

That's certainly the case here when I compare the same program material that's SSD-sourced to the external USB drive feed.

Agreed, but IME, most audiophiles don't generally follow/listen to ballet scores, per se. Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet might be the exception.

And, I'd guess most folks have never even heard of La fille mal gardée.
