Default How do you organize/remember streaming albums?

When ripping your digital collection most ripping software let you store your files in this format:

Artist (folder)
- Album Title 1
- Track Title 1
- Track Title 2

Each track has embedded metadata that includes that information. With the artist, album, track title and number embedded. So you know exactly where that track came from and the order in the album.

What software are you using for ripping? I recommend DBPoweamp.

My car plays the tracks in each album alphabetically. Since I want to play in the correct order, I need to "fix" the title of the track by making sure that the track number is included and that it precedes the title of the track.

So for Led Zeppelin II, it would look like this:

Led Zeppelin [artist folder]
- Led Zeppelin II [album]
- 01 Whole Lotta Love
- 02 What is and What Should Never

Adding the track number in front of the song title forces the player to play in the correct order.

The easiest way to fix metadata issues is using dedicated software. I use MP3TAG. It can do the fixing in batches and save you a lot of time.

PS #1 The more powerful music data management software (like Roon) do not care how you organize your files/folders. They use the metadata embedded in each track and are able to match your file data with data they already have. Then you can choose to display whichever data you prefer.

PS #2 Once you have the correct metadata in your tracks, you do not need to remember anything. That's the job of the software/player that you are using.

I keep track of all of my recordings whether CD, downloaded music, LP's or tagged Tidal content in my Music Collector app from CollectorZ. I do not use their cloud option but sync the content on my iPhone, iPads and MacBook Pro. I always know what recordings I own or have set-up in Roon.

Hi Jim, nice talking to ya last night, I took a look at CollectorZ and it's a really nice app to have handy if you want to look for something by tags. Kind of what I'm looking for. Their format would be a fantastic feature for apps like Tidal, Qobuz or the DCS Mosaic app.

I have CollectorZ but not happy with my results. Probably operator error but I have never been able to get it to load collections or keep the various versions of albums I have. Whether an LP, SACD, 24/192 Flac etc. I need a power user!

You could use Roon for all that.

You can't use Roon for vinyl. I love Roon for playing and organizing digital music, but if you want to catalog a complete collection including vinyl, tapes, multiple versions of a recording, etc., then you need a cataloguing software like Collectorz.

Jim, Craig;
Since you guys are both using Collectorz, are you using the cloud service or just the pc/mac/ios apps? If you're using the cloud, would you be interested in sharing links to libraries to see if we can learn anything from each other?

Roon and Music Collector are two completely different products. One is for playing music the other is for cataloging what you own.

I refuse to use the cloud services. I maintain it on my laptop and sync my iPhone and iPad to that. Those who like storing their data on the cloud will probably not have an issue.

Well... if you digitize your vinyl and tape collection Roon will manage it. I did all my tapes and many LPs years ago. I still have a few digitized LPs and cassette tapes in my Roon library (I replaced most of them once I started using Tidal).
