There was a period in the late 1960's, right before it became WRIF, when it was a free forum rock station, WXYZ FM. WABX and WKNR were also free forum rock stations very close by on the dial, from the late 1960's on to the 70's. They all ended up either becoming formatted or fading away. Another rock station from across the river, CJOM was also very good in the early 70's. They were what was called "underground radio" at the time. |

I grew up listening to DC-101 with Howard Stern and Robin Quivers and then after Howard left, Doug “The Greasman” Trecht. For music it was 99.1 WHFS for the edgier progressive sounds. I also recall listening to the Don Geronimo and Mike O’Meara show on WJFK. For some reason DC in the 70s and 80s seemed to be a fertile breeding ground for shock jocks.

I could pick it up on Saturday nights in S. IL. Didn’t they start the show with Gerry Rafferty’s Baker Street? Good AM radio

Yes - IIRC they did!
I also liked KSHE and had a 50’ tower and 11 element yagi when I lived in Quincy IL so I could get KSHE and other St. Louis stations. Because the local radio was really that bad.

When I lived in Huntington Beach KMET" broadcasting from high atop mt Wilson" was THE only station. With " this is BMR" my rock education began.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/B._Mitchel_Reed In 1973 I moved to Berkeley to be with my peoples, there I listened to the jive 95. KSAN fantastic jocks and further rock ed. I used to tape the live shows. Toots and the Maytals, Bob Marley live from the record plant, Springsteen from Winterland in 75, Sex pistols , i have a pile of cassetes. When KSAN went uptown country I discovered KMPX big band 24-7 and right near at the dial all of those college stations. Easy Punk 90.7 Kalx in Berkeley , Saturday night reggae show show from KPOO, Jazz from KALW, KFJC 89.7 free form radio from Los Altos, Love and use my MR88
