Cary preamps....why no tone controls?

Ha........ just noticed my Cary SLI-80 Sig does not have tone controls. Guess I don't need them. YMMV.

I haven't had tone controls on any audio gear in 30 years and I can't say I have ever missed them, nor even thought, "this would sound better if I had tone controls"

My feeling in regard to cables is not that they are used to tweak the sound, but instead let the gear perform go its maximum capability. Of course it will sound better since it now is operating close to its potential.

Tone control present yet another switch which the music needs to pass through. Someone figured out long back that the simplier and most direct an audio signal path is - the better.

Can't say I miss not having tone controls on my amps over the last 30 years. If anything removes one thing to "fiddle with" whilst listening, which can just distract you from the task at hand.

I would see the biggest potential use of them to tune for specific room acoustics. However, most tone controls are VERY broad brush in what frequencies they do change and that seems to be to be rather counter-productive. What I learned from playing with room correction software was that in my own rooms, bass "humps" and "troughs" were concentrated in relatively narrow frequency ranges, for which a bass control just wasn't the right solution.
So for me, either no tone controls at all, or something with far more granularity in it's capability.

What you are talking about for room correction would more properly be deemed a parametric equalizer.
