That is the good thing, the Cary remote doesn't need to be working. It's not a learning remote that needs the other remote to learn from. The only button that I haven't had luck programming is the Track Skip button on the Harmony. I still have to use the Rotel remote.

Many thanks for the info. I'll get one sorted, it makes a lot more sense than trying to get a replacement for the original

I have my problem fixed, now all the buttons work as they're supposed to.

Last time I called Cary and they wanted me to ship the preamp AND remote to them to investigate. Fortunately, a couple days later it started working again, just as mysteriously as it stopped working.
Just as an update, I called Cary technical staff yesterday and spoke with Mark about my remote problem. He once again walked me through the reset procedures. First, using a camera to test the infra-red signal from the remote control unit itself, yes, it was working. Then he suggested turning the SLP-98P off altogether (normally I leave it on Standby). This would reset the relays and possibly cure the problem. So I did as instructed and it did cure the problem. Remote is now functioning again. So now it is not a mystery anymore. When this happened before I must have shut the preamp off to change a power cord or something, and that is why it started working again.

FWIW, it is still a flimsy, plastic remote. Mark told me that the latest SLP-98's have a newer, better circuit complete with a newer metal remote control. He said if the reset didn't work I could send my unit in for an "upgrade". It's funny, those 3 days without a remote, I found that I think I could live w/o a remote. I wouldn't have thought that possible, but it wasn't as big a problem as I thought it would be.....perhaps that cool volume knob has something to do with that.
