HiFiSponge made some circles when he had his that prevented this.
To each his own...but to be fair Stephen, if you take a close look at the C1, that bottom plinth is not really part of the "beautiful speaker"; it's plain, Black composite whatever(?).

I was exactly where you are, initially; and then like I said, I got over it...lol. So, it would more accurately be like...if you bought a beautiful sportbike, and there was a plate that protected it from the aftermarket muffler you attached. Maybe you need to try a pair, and see how you really feel?

Once Stephen and I have the Esotar2 upgraded tweeters on our S3.4s there will be no reason to downgrade like that.

I agree. I cannot justify marking up my expensive speakers to pair them with good stands. I enjoy taking care of my gear.

OTOH, if you aren't coupling the S1.4/C1 to the Stand4 you aren't really taking full advantage of them anyway. In the end I think it's moot. Think of it as assembly required and when you disassemble there are marks from it.

It's like taking the engine off a bike. The engine has marks where it was coupled to the frame, but you don't normally leave the engine off anyway.

Dean, I can definitely see your very valid point. I guess I would have to see the base to make my ultimate decision. It just sounds a little disappointing to me that I would have to mark up my speaker at all. To each his/her own!

Side note - does anyone have high quality pics of the C1's in piano black?

That's the point I was trying to make as well Dean. Don't think of it as an after-market piece; they are meant to be together.

If you don't ever take it off, there are no marks to see!

There's a thought. Know any good divorce attorneys?

I do actually; my best friend is a divorce attorney...but he doesn't practice in your state...lol

Guys, I know Mick doesn't shy away from it...and says the crossover will work, etc, etc; and Mick's word is generally good enough for me. IDK...call me a cautious fellow; I just think if we're going to, on the one hand, praise Dynaudio for its design and balance...it could be a bit of a Frankenstein, to bolt Esotar2s where they "don't belong".

Now easy fellas; I can feel the vitriol starting to rise. All I'm saying, is if the Esotar2 was a simple plug-n-play on the Contour 3.4, why didn't it come with them? Yes, yes...hitting price points, etc. But if the 3.4 was perfectly extraordinary before...as you guys certain seem to hold it up as...wasn't the design, and crossover dialed-in to the Esotec to begin with? The 5.4 has a single Esotar2...but a whole, additional mid-range driver! If it were me...I'd be worried, that after the not-so-small-drop-in-the-bucket of ~$1800, my sound wouldn't quite be in balance.

We're all fanatics, here and at the other, popular Dyn forum; do we have any real-world feedback? Maybe there's a reason we don't hear about it more? Just sayin'; don't hate.

Mick has said they have done it and it sounds great. I will take his word for it. It might well be that the Esotar2 don't belong on the S3.4s for marketing and pricing reasons alone, rather than for design reasons. Maybe it can be thought of more like rolling tubes for speakers.

The C1, C2, and S5.4 all crossover to the Esotar2 at 2200, 1800 and 2000 Hz respectively. The S3.4 crossover is 2000 Hz, so it seems like a good compatibility matrix to me.
