I have just ordered a Maxipreamp II and will post impressions when I have tried it out. For the moment, a question: As per the picture of the cover sheet in Dan's original post, why is the 12AU7 listed as a medium Mu tube and the ECC82 listed as a low Mu tube?

Default MaxiMatcher 2 and MaxiPreamp 2 tube testers

I have all three. Maximatchers are great and I rely most heavily on both of them. The orange is best IMHO for assisting in grouping tubes. For new sets of NOS tubes I use the orange first because it doesn’t ramp the tube up to test. Then I check all parameters on the maximatcher II or maximatcher for power tubes for final testing and grouping together.

I use a Hickok RD Instrumentation 1575 that I refurbished and calibrated and this is excellent for testing and matching power tubes, DHTs, voltage reference tubes and power supply pass tubes, etc. It is however a bit twitchy with small signal tubes such as the 12AX7...hence my decision to pick up a Maxipreamp II. Any comment on the fact that the 12AU7 is listed as a medium Mu tube and the ECC82 as a low Mu tube?

I just purchased an Orange VT1000 to have ‘just in case’. While a certain member has performed testing on my tubes in the past, I just lost one that took out a few resistors in one of my MC2301s. The tech told me which tube slot was bad but I don’t have those tubes segregated so need a way to quickly separate it when I get the amp back. (I sent it for service with the tubes that were in the other operating amp). I think the Orange should allow me to find the bad tube. If not, I am buying 8 new GL KT 88s.

Craig.......The Orange VT1000 tube tester is a reliable and easy to use tester. You should be able to identify your bad KT88 without a problem.

Sorry to hear the MC2301 required service after a power tube failure. I am surprised the Sentry Monitor circuit did not shut the amplifier down before any damage could occur. I had a power tube issue with my right channel MC2301, and fortunate for me the Sentry Monitor circuit shut the amp off immediately with no damage. I tested all eight KT88's and replaced the the bad one. I recall that Ivan had a power tube failure in one of his MC2301's that shut the amp down. Unfortunately he tried energizing the amplifier with the failed tube still in place which caused some resistor failures which required service. $h!t happens. I hope you are back up and running soon.

Yup, that happened to me when my 2301’s were relatively new. Zero issues since that point in time.

Local tech found the circuit in the #2 tube was bad and many other resistors were out of spec. With fingers crossed, hope to have it back in the next two weeks without having to freight it up north.

Glad to hear the Orange will work for my purposes.

When many resistors are out of spec, I would suspect excessive heat building up. You could extend the tube and component life with quiet fan cooling across the chassis and by raising the chassis an inch or two off the supporting surface...if you have not already done so.

Thanks for the thoughts. These Amps have almost since new, been on open Sound Anchor amp stands and for the last year or so, on Stillpoint Ultra SS. Footers. Can’t get much more ventilation than that without adding fans.

I am thinking of having my other amp looked at now.

FWIW... I checked my other Amps tubes when I had my previous failure.
