There we go!!

Actually I don't see either scenario as being very likely. Usually a manufacturer won't change the physical design of an existing product without calling it a different model.

Actually, I don't have a real problem with the newer design, it's really pretty similar anyway. But, I'd like to see them offer a "black" version as they have with the DAC2.
If I were to stack the server with the DAC2, I'd want to have it in black for a uniform appearance.

On another note, the DAC2 is said to be internally upgradeable. I'll be curious to see what upgrades, if any, come along down the road for the DAC2, and how the user would go about implementing them.

Also Pete if you use Amarra or Pure Music or whatever your flavor through iTunes on your computer, you can use an iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad as a remote control. That way you don't have to use your TV as a monitor to change tunes. Just more food for thought...

Gotta pull this up from the archives..

Feature for feature, a system with a W4S Server, DAC, Preamp, and Amp looks to offer better features than most.

Some that come to mind:
Is^2 over HDMI (who else has this??)
Fully balanced from source to output
absolute phase switch (on the remote!)
iOS interface
Popular streaming sw( Pandora, etc..)
extremely low signal to noise

If you you didn't need the looks and say tucked the W4S gear away, I think most would make the switch.

Thoughts?

Bill, I have been thinking hard about going with the W4S music server and a DAC 2 via I2S. I own a W4S STP-SE preamp and it is a terrific value. I also have a custom DAC fed via I2S (unfortunately not in HDMI format) and can attest to the advantage of delivering the signal to the chip in that format.

The only two things holding me back are (1) it is FLAC only and I do not know enough to know if that is good or bad and (2) currently do not have rack space for it.

What's wrong with FLAC?

Do you want DSD?

hmm.. I like I2S better than Is^2.. good one.

Oh and I forgot to add the Hometheater Bypass to the features, so you can have your HT receiver do all the home theater stuff, and the STP-SE do all the Music stuff.

Bill, I am not saying FLAC is bad - I have no real idea. I just see other formats touted and wonder.

FYI, the STP-SE is not in the rig at the moment (ousted by the mighty BAT VK-52 SE). I cited the STP-SE as real world experience attesting to the skills of the W4S folks.
