When I started back into vinyl I bought the P9, but of course that wasn't enough so had to move to a SME 20/2. If I had stopped at the P9 I would have been nearly as happy and saved a lot of $$. As others have mentioned there are some pretty damn good tables to look at in your price range, good luck with your search.

P9 is now discounted for $3995 - 20% markdown. I use a Lyra Delos on mine and am enjoying the the combination eminsely. I do feel the level of the P9 justifies a better cartridge.

Thanks again for all the input, I think I'm going to wait on the RP8. I didn't realize it also had the outer plinth that made it look more like a classic turntable. Also it has a much smaller power supply than the P9, which is a plus for me. I will probably pick up that discounted cart I saw and keep that on hand.

From a new member from Nashville TN and far from expert support as many in the US are, I have for 27 years enjoyed my Linn LP 12. Ittock LV II, recently with Lyra Delos, Naim Stageline, Flatcap.
I'm curious that I read no mention of Linn or Naim so far. |

I had a LP12 for 25 years. My problem with it was the difficulty of setup, and that once setup, it had to be adjusted again because it didn't stay setup. I got rid of mine (with an Afromosia fluted plinth) because it was going to cost too much to modernize it and I didn't want to have to deal with periodic readjustments. There really isn't a shop locally that deals with Linn LP12s any more, except for an appointment only dealer who also spends a bit of time on the road. I'm a big Naim fan, but the phono preamp is my one bit of non-Naim electronics, The Stageline was out of my price range, not to mention I would also have to get another PSU for it. I also don't like the fact that you can't change loading.

Unlike some others, I do not consider the lack of adjustability (ie cartridge loading) a disadvantage. I chose the Delos as my first low output MC and a new Lingo was unavailable.
I cannot see why one would go back to a high output MM after living with the dynamics of the Delos. As with all things, to each his/her own. After all, there remains vanilla and chocolate. It's all good. After all, the point is the music, not the hardware. |
