Default To vinyl or not...that is the question...

The last new turntable I purchased was a Dual turntable in the early 80's. Yesterday I went to a dealer and saw turntables ranging from $300-$22,000.00 works of art.

I started looking at New and used tables. I was attracted to a few used 2000.00 art pieces and was ready to pull the tropigger on one of them.

Then I asked myself if I'm really going to love the vinly experience after living in the spoiled digital world for so long. Spoiled in the way of never having to get out of my listening chair, or just jumping to whatever song I wanted. So after telling the salesman my concerns we both agreed that a Rega RP1 with the performance package was the way to go. I knew that if I hated vinyl then I only invested 5-$600 into it. And if I loved it, I could keep the Rega or upgrade and only loose about 150.00.

I took the Rega home, setup a temporary stand and threw on some vinyl......................I listened for 3 hours straight. I can't stand the crackle, but other than that it's amazing, I feel like everything has opened up. It sounds much more organic than digital. I had a few brand new albums that we're still sealed and even though they were almost dust free, I still heard a few crackles.

I'm going to keep listening....more to follow.

I never thought I would get back into vinyl, but that all changed here:

Now I'm working on my 2nd TT Rig.

I have to admit I love the discipline of listening to the entire album in order.

I remember appreciating albums, now we tend to appreciate individual songs.

You will love vinyl I am sure. I returned to vinyl about 6 years ago after not playing records for 15 years. I bought a Thorens TD125mk2 used and never looked back. I still own that Thorens and enjoy it immensly.

Enjoy your new vinyl rid.

Your post is right up my alley. My last TT was a Dual 627CS I bought with my hard earned money around 1980. I still have it, manual and all. After two basement floods all of my vinyl was destroyed.

Like you , I've been thinking about getting a TT again and finding out if my love of vinyl still exists or if it's one of those childhood memories I want to relive.

It's good to hear that it brings back the enjoyment of music for you (not that it ever went away, but to take some time out to actually listen to an album).

For me Life's too short to listen to filler tracks. There is too much good music to discover. If there is only one good track on an album or by an artist I will save that to a "singles" playlist in case I want to hear that track. One example of that is Toni Braxton's "Unbreak My Heart" which I find is one of the great performances on disc, while I can't get into the rest of her stuff.

I can appreciate Jim's position, I agree with it, on some days, but have found that I really enjoy the whole process of vinyl. You need to get a record cleaner (try the spin clean, it's cheap and is supposed to work well) that will take care of the "crackle", then take your time getting each album ready.

I'm sure Lakesailor will chime in, his analogy which I think is spot on is it's similar to throwing a steak in a pan and frying it, or taking the time to start your BBq/Grill, clean it, get it up to temp and cooking the perfect steak. Both get the job done, but the experience of the BBQ makes the whole process enjoyable.

Enjoy!

Mike

Steve,
Welcome! Like Mike said, the noise goes way down when you clean your vinyl. Even new albums. A cartridge with a small footprint stylus that plays deep in the groove helps as well. I hear an amazing difference in record noise floor between my Rega Elys cartridge and my Dynavector. The Elys is a standard elliptical, the Dynavector some fancy nude diamond dealio with a small footprint.

To be totally honest if I didn't hear a true difference I don't think I would be interested in all the extra fuss.

When I bought my magnapans the sales man played a CD for me. I said "sold" in 2 minutes. He then said "when was the last time you heard vinyl?" I told him many moons ago. He put on an album on the exact same hardware setup. I instantly heard the difference. I found that everything opened up.

I will tackle the dust and beat it. Lol
