I use them very sparingly, usually only when spinning some 1/4" reel tape at low volume I will add a touch of treble.
Any source I play at normal to upper volumes I disengage the tone controls. If you have them use them if your ears tell you so, don't worry about what the magazines/reviewers might say, they have no clue who you are and your room acoustics, or the age of your ears. Enjoy the music |

I have tried but do not use the tone controls in my Momentum pre-amp. Lately I have been fiddling with the DSP built into Roon and find myself occasionally turning bumping the bass a bit which helps at the volumes I normally listen. Of course DSP must be turned off whenever listening to MQA titles.
If you need 'em use 'em. They won't hurt. |

Depends on the recording and the SPL at which I'm listening.
Some recordings need EQ. If I'm listening at levels below 83-85 dB SPL, most systems need some EQ due to the Fletcher-Munson Equal Loudness Contour Curves. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fletch...3Munson_curves |

Tone controls are there to use as you need. However, I would suggest that if you need +6 on the bass and treble, you might be a candidate for better speaker locations/room treatments. Either that or you have unique hearing and/or listening preferences.

The tone controls really qualify as EQs on modern Macs. Eight bands as provided on the C52 becomes a fairly useful program EQ but in no way can it compensate for anything going on in the room so as a tuning device it's functionally useless. To touch up a mix I think doesn't have enough (or has too much) of something it's a pretty functional tool. The problem is that if you use the filters routinely, you need to constantly be making adjustments on an album by album or even song by song basis. And as the filters can't be adjusted remotely, you're not able to do real time changes from the listening position. At least I can't.
All that fussiness is too much for me to fool around with just to make a bad mix on a particular piece sound a bit better. It would take a really egregious recording to have me out of my chair to touch it up. If I was recording or transferring to another medium, then the EQ might be handy from time to time. But I don't do that. Consequently I stopped using the EQ for playback on my C52 a few weeks after I got it. But I did decide that in moderation it worked pretty well as long as you didn't boost adjacent bands too much. That's typical for most analog EQs. The Mac's EQ is clean in moderation. As a rule EQ is usually less intrusive if you can cut out the problem or work subjectively with a few bands. The filters tend to blend a bit better, and you're not adding boost which can also bring noise along with it, band and system dependent. I'm not knocking it but I don't use 'em. Do u adjust the Tone Control?
Do I use these, yes. In my equipment it’s designed to be there and gives you options, so why would I not?
Use depends on the recording, volume levels or mood. |
