Looking for an appropriate thread in which to post a couple of questions regarding the Control 15/Twinstore system that I just acquired within the last couple of weeks, and this looked like a good one, hopefully. First, I'm learned a lot from browsing the Meridian forum here and on The Hitchhikers Guide to Meridian, plus I've read everything on the Meridian site that I could find. As others have commented, it would be great if Meridian provided a more comprehensive, updated, consolidated form of documentation for Sooloos, but most of questions have been answered--and new features 'discovered'--through perusing all of the sources mentioned above.
Two quick questions, however: 1) I can't find any description of the process by which Sooloos determines how to classify an album as to Quality rating--nor any way to adjust that rating. I would have assumed it just treated 16/44.1 source as normal, anything above as high quality, anything below as low quality (don't recall exact terms used by system). But I imported a standard redbook CD that I had previously ripped, in standard flac format, and it labeled it as high quality. Does anyone know more about how this "feature" works in Sooloos? 2) With the idea that EVERY system will eventually get replaced or migrated eventually, I'm just wondering whether one could--theoretically--build a non-Sooloos-based media management system from the stored files? IOW, is all of the metadata stored in or with the music files in a non-proprietary manner or are those JUST flac files with all of the metadata stored in a Sooloos database, so one would have to import the music and start from scratch in collecting/customizing the metadata? Thanks! Jerry |

Jerry, congrats on your new Sooloos system.
As for question number 1, I would guess the CD was a HDCD. When db poweramp rips HDCDs to FLAC it uses the HDCD encoding to create a 24 bit 44.1kHz FLAC file from the CD. Sooloos lists any 24 bit files as high res. For question number 2, all the metadata is Sooloos proprietary and will only work on a Sooloos system. A Sooloos backup will keep all the metadata but it will only work with your Sooloos. You can do an "export" backup which will give you your music files in a backup that can be used with other systems but this backup will only have artist and song/album titles for metadata. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Victor, thanks for the quick reply--and Masterlu for the welcome.
I'd be very surprised if this disc is HDCD encoded--self-produced by Scott Alarik with his own songs on it, called All That Is True. There's certainly no indication that it's HDCD, but it's not important. You've confirmed my assumption, anyway, that Sooloos just assigns a nominal Quality to each album based on some interpretation of bit depth and resolution cutoffs, yes? I'll probably want to tag to a more granular level anyway, like specifying 24x96 or SACD as source, etc. I'm dismayed to hear that they are not providing any kind of viable migration path that includes access to the metadata that one must so laboriously collect, groom, and massage. That is one of the primary reasons I went with Sooloos--access to good metadata--along with interface and sound quality, of course. But having no long-term migration scenario is a bummer, imho. I certainly like most everything else I've done with the system so far. I owned Qsonix and built a PC-based system in the past, but decided to go with Sooloos for the reasons mentioned above and REALLY like it so far. Cheers, Jerry |

I agree with your disappointment in the loss of metadata on migration. The additional information has become quite indispensable when searching through my classical data, mainly the 'Credits' field. I currently still maintain a purpose-built MacPro and looked to migrate a few new imports back over to it. 'No Joy!' Reg

Thanks for the additional welcomes!
Not to beat a dead horse on this metadata issue, but I wonder if anyone has a sense of what the barriers are to Meridian implementing a full export, music files and metadata (embedded in the flac files or as text files or whatever)? My mind goes in various directions, including: Why would anyone ever leave our system, so what's the point? Contractual agreement with AMG not to give perpetual access to the downloaded metadata? Just more work that's deemed not necessary from their standpoint? Just wondering... Thanks, Jerry |
