No, they don't get hot.

But they really do need a good 300 hours to sound their best. You're in for a treat!

FWIW we had a "dac-off" last year at a friend's system. I can't exactly recall what dacs were there but there were 5 or 6, some very expensive. In the context of a very revealing (and expensive) system the wee Bifrost certainly didn't disgrace itself and was picked by all as the value for money dac present. It ran awfully close to a Resolution Cantata at around teh 6k mark. Most people liked the NAD M 51 running XLR into a Vitus power amp. Me? I prefered the Bifrost. But then I was familiar with the sound, having owned a Bifrost for about 6 months, and loved it. Great product. Isn't it terrific that so much is available for so little - much like the Mytek DSD 192 dac - which is seriously good also.

Kind Regards

Des anyone have experience trying to speak with the manufacturer (Schiit)? I have called 3 times in the last 10 days without a response. They don't answer the phone and, apparently, don't return voicemails either. Pretty disappointing from a customer service perspective.

The reason for my call was I tried to order the bifrost from audio advisor and they told me the bifrost was discontinued and being replaced. Anyone heard about this? Given their total disregard for my inquiries, I'm a bit concerned about doing business with a company like that.

Maybe in their defense:
From the Schiit web site
Phone: (323) 230-0079 (leave us a message, please . . . we are not psychic. And, if you want timely answers, we strongly encourage email. We do not accept orders via phone. Just email us, OK?)

Maybe they also attend C.E.S. In Las Vegas at the moment?

+1

I emailed late on a Saturday afternoon and heard back within 30 minutes, I wasn't expecting to hear from them until Monday.

Put back the Schiit Bifrost in the second system.
Why ?
Because Alexander listened to it and found some harshness in the treble with the Metrum Octave.
So yes, the Bifrost is sweeter than the Octave Mini Dac, at least after around 120 hours with the Octave. As Adam said that the Octave needs 300 hours to break in, I will wait until I can decide which one I really prefer.
The Bifrost is sweeter by now. And the Octave seems more neutral and lean.

Finally got an email from them. Apparently, telephones aren't their thing.
