Default Alternatives to JRiver

Who besides JRiver can I use for my streaming digital library?

after I started this thread I found an active thread about Roon. Watched the video you posted, thanks again, and read a post by Mike which swayed me back to Jriver. Classical is what I mostly listen to now and much of the stuff has little metadata and cover art is always missing. Tagging is critical.
Roon's seamless integration with Tidal does not help me as just 2 months ago I canclled Tidal as it's classical offering, especially new releases, is terrible.

5 years ago, before I turned my attention so drastically toward classical I would have jumped on Roon. Seems about perfect for popular music, especially with it's Tidal integration.

Come to thing of it, maybe I will do the free offer. How could it hurt?

I pay little attention to the classical offerings on Tidal. I have found several fine MQA releases from Karajan versions of Bruckner, Sibelious and Dvorak. Since I only search for music by the artists name I never have a problem.

I do know on another site they are very complimentary of the number of classical MQA titles dribbling out. Below I have cut and pasted a few comments.

Bychkov 'Manfred'
Solti 'Elektra'
Kleiber 'Figaro'
Karajan 60s Brahms, Respighi 'Butterfly' with Pavarotti,
Pavarotti 'Macbeth'
Britten 'War Requiem'
Uchida Schumann & Mozart
Ansermet 'La Mer'
Freire 'Brahms'

New DG releases are sometimes there; Villazon 'Duets' but no Zimmerman Schubert.

Fingers crossed we still get more releases, and as far as I can ascertain, after the major release of most of Callas' great live recordings, next week we get Bowie's Berlin trilogy and 'Scary', and in October some great stuff from Warner - Karajan 'Rosenkavalier', Klemperer 'Dutchman' and DG Karl Richter 'Bach Oratorios'.

It is funny I have never had an issue with cover art. Occasionally it is different from those on my CD's but easy to fix.

Everyone told me to go with Roon but no, I had to be a jerk...

In the end, I felt I had too much invested in JRiver (album art, tagging ad even track names) and I was scared it would all be lost.

As usual, a glich in JRivers leaves me beyond frustrated as they have no customer service.

So now, after paying for a new license, I am once again looking to dump it.

My question is. Can I run Roon's trial with JRiver also loaded using the same library?

I would not open both programs at once.

I should be more clear, I haven't done exactly what you are asking, but I've shared libraries between Jriver and Audirvana, and then later between Audirvana and Roon. Never any issues.

I think we'll have another Roon convert soon

Default Alternatives for JRiver

I’m not familiar with your setup, but if you are streaming using a server and a control point app, there’s also Minimserver. Minimserver is a “donate-ware” (free but donations are accepted) music server. It’s helpful if you’re a bit computer savvy, but it’s incredibly flexible and works with any upnp or DLNA control point.

Yes and No

I have my NAS where my files are - so both JRiver and Roon will both read from them and create their own metadata database.

But there's a big caveat.

JRiver is a monster when it comes to file support. It does everything. ISO SACDs, full CD FLAC with cue splits etc.

Roon is a bit more of a pain when it comes to file support. I had to split my SACD ISO rips to individual DSF files - and even then, I just found out a month ago that there is a list of files that Roon couldn't read (it is tucked away in one of the Settings menus) and these included DSF files. The same files played fine in Audirvana Plus v2 and JRiver so I know they work.

You should be fine if the file formats you use is the lowest common denominator for JRiver and Roon. It does mean using apps like XLD and ISO2DSD to convert any of the aforementioned files
