It's rather perplexing given the high regard other owners hold these units in.
In my city I've observed a correlation between the popularity of a brand and the availability of used units of that brand. So I guess this is a positive trait.

Just to chime in.... My guess would be there are far less Esoteric players being sold from first owner than other brands. Esoteric has a sound that is more often liked than not, in general. I would imagine Ivan could give an estimate of how many players just he has sold versus the total of all players sold listed on Agon period, and it would be lower than any brand. And in 2 years I have yet to see a listing for a Grandioso stack.... Not that there is a lot of them out there. And you will definitely see 50 percent back or better. Hell, I sold my X-01/D2 last year for $5750.00, date code Aug. 07, and as a stand alone multi channel player it is still top of the line.

I, for one, am glad someone had a gently used, mint condition K03 for sale on Audiogon; otherwise, my wife would never have "allowed" me to buy one!

Interesting re: your move from the K-03 to the x: I'm contemplating doing the same, basically for a lateral investment, but w/ no audition opportunities unfortunately. Aside from the improved versatility, uptick in sampling rate, DSD, etc., what have your ears told you re: general presentation, partic. w/ redbook? Significant or subtle overall?

IMO, not a lot of difference between non-X and X versions for CD and SACD. Mostly for me was the addition of the DSD format which I wanted to stay current. If that does not interest you then go with a gently pre owned K-01 at a great price.

IMO there is a rather significant improvement in the "X" models if your system can resolve the improvement. I have heard all of these units side by side in my Burmester/Aida system.

Esoteric is not one of those companies that just come out with a new unit for the heck of it. Only when they can significantly improve the prior model(s) will they do so.

Case in point; they worked for three years on the development of the K1. At first, even they didn't think they could Best the K01-X but in fact they did.

I will defer to Ivan but my thinking is that I would strongly consider a gently pre-owned K-01 first, then a K-03X second. That is until I saw the deal Ivan has on a K-01X in the marketplace

Between the 2 sites over the last year the sale ads have been mostly for non-X units for people moving up to X units or up to the K1. Those selling K-03 or K-03X seem to be moving up to K-01X when they have the choice. The real audible difference in the X units is for those who need/want native DSD streaming via USB. Units like the P-02/D-02 from 2-3 years ago are very close to their X compatriots but with addition of ES-LINK4 (via HDMI only) and native DSD (and a new DAC offering).

Remember,...it's all relative; at its introduction (IMHO), the K-01 and P-02/D-02 were 'the best' out there bested only by (again IMHO) the 4-box Esoteric stack or prior VU series. People upgrade things,....audiophiles upgrade things 'more' :-). There is nothing wrong with prior gens of these products, the X and new K1 are simply better in several key areas. FWIW...

More recently, I think most of this can be explained by the advent of the Grandioso K1s and someone's amazing ability to pipe orders into Eso-Japan for more than anyone else seems to be able to outside of Asia :-) !
