Wink One more thing...

...about amplifiers, James. Considering that we drive our B&W 802Ns with a Mac MC300 and our 805Ns with our MAC4200, which mono amplifier would you be thinking about when it comes to that mono/center amp you mentioned?

Sorry I am not all that familiar with Mac products. Do they have a Mono amp or a stereo amp that could be bridged to mono?

Seeing how we're on the Bryston board, and that you represent them, I was asking about a Bryston mono amp that might work for us, James...

Ah OK - I was thinking you wanted to keep your electronics the same.

Ok I would suggest our 7B Mono amp or a Bridged (mono) 3B amplifier depending on the speaker chosen.

James..... One question about those Bryson Amps...We are employing B&W Nautilus line speakers for our [modest] surround system. They are 8-ohm speakers, so does that somehow make choosing one Bryston amp over the other (7B or 3B) a bit more obvious?

Hi

Not really as 8 ohms is a pretty benign load for an amplifier. When you bridge an amp it 'see'd' 1/2 of the load it does in stereo so in this case 4 ohms.

I would make the decision based on power need.

As ever, thank you for the information...I'm getting there, slowly but surely...

Default Question for James

James - Bryston..... We presently have a line on a new center speaker, which would be the "fifth" in our simple 5.1 setup. We still lack a subwoofer, but I figure that matching a sub to our B&W speaker set is less problematic, which brings me back to amplification.

As you may recall, the plan is to keep our Mac MC300 (300W) amp to drive our front speakers. With the addition of a center, we would be looking for a multichannel amp to drive the center and the rears. I realize that it presents a substantial difference in "per channel" amplification -- 75W versus 300W -- but what are your thoughts on employing the Bryston 875HT as a 3-channel amp in the 5.1 setup I just described?

HI

The 875 would work only difference there is there is not a separate transformer for each channel as there is in all the other Bryston amps. The 875 has 2 transformers for the 8 channels.

Also remember what I said about difficulties when you start bridging amplfiers.

I would look at our 6B SST2 amplifier given your setup.
